THE JEWISH MEMORY: In the history of the Jewish people it will be recorded that if not for President Harry S. Truman there would probably not have been the state of Israel. It was Truman's firm determination, when he was President of the United States, to see the Jewish state established. He broke all the obstacles placed in the way by Britain and other governments in the United Nations aimed at preventing the creation of an independent state of Israel. He ignored his own State Department's strong suggestion that the area be placed under "trusteeship." He personally helped to secure a critical vote which was needed for the passing by the UN of the historic Partition Resolution by the proper majority. And — to the chagrin of the State Department and the U.S. delegation to the United Nations — he announced American recognition of Israel immediately after the state was officially proclaimed, without informing anyone in advance. He lost no time to be the first head of a government granting recognition to the newly-born Jewish state, serving as an example to others. The people of Israel now celebrating the 30th anniver- sary of the existence of their state — as well as the Jews everywhere.= have not forgotten the historic role played by Truman in bi iuging about the birth of the state of Israel and the aid he had given to the fledgling state in its early difficult years, the "Tzena" period when the country had no food, when everything in food was severely rationed, and when milk was provided only for children. The Jewish people have gratefully immortalized his name through var- ious projects in Israel. Far-sighted American Jews have established, through the American Friends of the Hebrew University, the Harry S. Truman Research Institute on Mt. Scopus, which has become an international center of re- search on problems relating to the Middle East and the developing countries of the Third World. THE GREAT PARTNERSHIP: American Jewry—all elements in American Jewry — have, during the 30 years of Israel's existence, continued to stand side-by-side with Is- rael and to be of assistance to the Jewish state. In Israel, American Jewry is spoken of as being in "partnership" with the people of Israel in the upbuilding of the country. This partnership expresses itself not only in providing Israel with an average of $1 billion a year through the United Jewish Appeal, the sale of Israel Bonds, and funds that are being raised in the United States by Hadassah, Histadrut Campaign, Jewish National Fund, Red Magen NMU Prof Looks David and other groups, in addition to private investments. at Israel Tutors It finds expression also in standing on guard over Israel's MARQUETTE — Dr interests in the United States — in fighting anti-Israel elements in this country and in watching American-Israel Theodore A. One can now 8,000 Israeli children. find in Jewish schools and summer camps teachers from Israel implanting in the children love for Jewishness and for Israel. Contributions to Jewish pride have also been made by first-class Israeli artists who enjoy great success in their concerts in all major cities in the United States. The 30 years of contributions of American Jewry to Israel and of Israel's contributions to U.S. Jewry are two sides of the same coin. We hear often of the decline in Jewish spiritual values in the U.S., but who knows how American Jewry would have looked today were it not for Israel's birth 30 years ago.
