Opera, concert and
Broadway entertainer
Norman Atkins will per-
form in a benefit program
for Cong. Beth Shalom 8
p.m. May 21 at the
synagogue.
The program, "The Best
of Broadway," will include

songs and vignettes from
Broadway musicals of the
last 50 years. Proceeds will
benefit the synagogue's
adult education program.

New York -Rabbi to Address Annual Vaad Dinner May 24

Rabbi Emmanuel Get-
tinger, spiritual leader of
Young Israel of West Side
Manhattan, will be the
guest speaker at the annual
dinner of the Council of Or-
thodox Rabbis 6 p.m. May
24 at the main Jewish
Community Center com-
plex.
Rabbi Gettinger is
chairman of the department
of talmudic studies at Touro
College and a member of the
executive committee of the
Union of Orthodox Rabbis of
the United States and
Canada. Many of his arti-
cles and essays have ap-
peared in scholarly journals
throughout the country.
The Vaad Harabonim
provides supervision for all

kosher catering, business
and manufacturing estab-
lishments that require cer-
tification for the authentic-
ity of kashrut. The Bet Din
handles many cases of liti-
gation, religious divorce,
conversion and adoption
procedures and problems of
interpersonal relationships.

The Vaad maintains an
ongoing program of the
Daf Yomi, the daily study
of Talmud by special ses-
sions throughout the
community. It sponsors
programs and institutes
in connection with the
holidays and publishes
tracts clarifying religious
observance.
Gustav Berenholz is
chairman of the dinner.

Nathan Soberman are co-

Israeli Novelist Amos Oz
to Deliver SZ Talk Tuesday

Israeli novelist Amos Oz
will deliver a lecture 8 p.m.
Tuesday at Cong. Shaarey
Zedek, sponsored by Irwin
T. Holtzman and presented
under the auspices of the
synagogue's cultural com-
mission.
Oz is the author of sev-
eral books, the newest,
"The Hill of Evil Coun-
sel," will be published
this month by Harcourt
Brace Jovanovich.
He will speak on "An
Encounter With Amos Oz:
Perspectives on Modern Is -
rael" and "On Being an Is-
raeli Writer."
Oz studied at the He-
brew University and was
a visiting fellow at Ox-
ford University. Aside
from being a novelist, Oz
has published articles on
the Arab-Israeli conflict.
His books will be for sale
at the lecture and the
author will be available for
autographs. The public is
invited free of charge.
