Sami Esmail 'Beaten' Again?

TEL AVIV — Attorney
Felicia Langer has charged
that Israeli prison guards
have beaten Michigan State
University student Sami
Esmail. Earlier charges by
Mrs. Langer that Esmail
had been tortured were re-
futed by U.S. observers and
Embassy officials.
Esmail, standing trial for
allegedly being a member of
the Popular Front for the
Liberation of Palestine, is
spending two weeks in sol-
itary confinement, accord-

ing to Mrs. Langer, for re-
fusing to be searched and
threatening a guard.

A spokesman for the U.S.
Embassy who visited Es-
mail with Mrs. Langer on
Sunday said Esmail was in
good health. Mrs. Langer
said he was dirty from a
week in solitary confine-
ment. She claimed that Es-
mail and two other clients of
hers were placed in solitary
because they complained of
prison conditions.

Israel, Papua
Establish Tie

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Israel and Papua-New
Guinea have established
diplomatic relations, the
foreign ministry an-
nounced. Israel's Ambas-
sador to Australia, Michael
Elizur, will also serve as
ambassador to Papua-New
Guinea.
Another diplomatic event
was the signing of a 10-year
fishing agreement between
Israel and South Africa. Is-
raeli trawlers will be
allowed to fish within the
200-mile limit declared by
-South Africa. The two coun-
tries will cooperate in scien-
tific research and in fish
processing techniques and
industries.

At the Forum Auditorium
in suburban Ingleside,
Begin was greeted by
12,000 cheering members of
the Los Angeles Jewish
community. In an obvious
good mood after the Wash-
ington talks, Begin never-
theless told the crowd that
Israel would never return to
her 1967 borders "where she
would be at the mercy of
9,000 Arab tanks."
He also appealed to the
leaders of the Soviet Union
on behalf of Soviet Jewry.

Jerry Brown made ap-
pearances at the rally
and expressed strong
support for Israel. Sev-
eral hundred Palestinian
demonstrators marched
outside the Forum and
several arrests were re-
ported.

The latest Louis Harris poll
results showed that 66-26
percent of Americans are
opposed to the Carter Ad-
ministration's proposed sale
of jet aircraft to Israel,
Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Begin also attended a

luncheon, a dinner hosted
by Chicago Mayor Michael
Bilandic and received an
honorary degree from
Northwestern University.
He was scheduled to spend
