he Best of Everything

(Continued from Page 28)
ternoons brought school
kids who peered through
Pixley and Ehlers windows
. . . watching bakers pre-
pare fresh doughnuts, a
house speciality.
Before King Castle ham-
burgers could move in,
there was one thing to do
, . . install a lock in the
door.
MUSICAL GROUP ap-
pearing Tuesday through
Saturday til June 3 at
Northfield Hilton's Hur-
ley's, Crooks Rd. at 1-75, is
called SCAT.
Although SCAT's style is
a well-blended sound, the
band derives its name from
a verb meaning to impro-
vise song with accompani-
ment.
After playing individu-
ally for years. SCAT mem-
bers banded together in
1976 and quickly developed
a following in the Ann
Arbor area . . . The group
produced an album of signa-
ture tunes from the 40's,
50's and 60's and is cur-
rently collecting material
for a second album.
DID YOU KNOW . . .
from Food For Thought by
Consumers for Pure
Food ....
". . . that milk contains a
high amount of Tryptophan,
an essential amino acid,
which will calm a racing
brain and allow a person to
fall asleep. Just one more
example of a safe and simple
nutritional answer to a
problem for which modern
medicine prescribes all
sorts of dangerous drugs.
". . . that the hormone
MGA is given to cattle to
eliminate their sex drive, a
practice sanctioned by FDA.
Sex drive in cattle is an un-
acceptable activity since it
burns away precious
calories and reduces cattle
weight.
". . . that at Integral
Health Services in Putnam,
Conn., physicians generally
recommend that at least 50
percent of the diet should
consist of raw food.
.. that table salt, in
the process of purifying,
has all native minerals
stripped away and is
enriched with dextrose to
stabilize it, sodium
bicarbonate to keep it
white, and chemical
anti-caking agents to
keep it free-flowing. Use
sea salt readily available
at health food stores,
Shopping Center Mar-
kets and Farmington
Fruit.
. . that the best butter
you can buy states 'made
from sweet cream' on the
label. Other butter may be
made from stale or soured
milk or cream. Salt added to
butter masks any off-flavor
and off-quality. Be sure to
buy sweet butter with no
salt added.
". . . that you needn't de-
spair if your child refuses to
drink milk. Alternative cal-
cium sources are nuts, be-
ans, cauliflower, broccoli
and seafood, just to name a
few.

. . that cottonseed oil
is present in all 'pure veget-
able oil' margarines. Cotton
is not a food crop therefore it
receives more than its share
of chemical sprays. An ex-
cellent reason for selecting
pure oil or safflower oil
margarine."

RE-
MICHIGAN
STAURANTS are taking a

major step toward energy
and water conservation
with the adoption of a
"water on request only" pol-
icy by the Michigan Re-
staurant Association.
The board of directors of
MRA represents 1,600 re-
staurants in Michigan.
MRA is also making
available, at cost (seven
cents each), table tents to
publicize the policy in re-
staurants . . . They are
available to members and
non-members by phoning
(313) 645-9770, or writing
the Michigan Restaurant
Association, 30161 South-
field, Southfield 48076.
FIOR D' ITALIA on
Northwestern and 12 will
have patio dining this
summer . . . Owner John
Young has certainly come a
long way with his fine re-
staurant.
DAVE FEKAY, author
of "The Sensuous Kitchen",
may soon be appearing on
the Dinah Shore Show.
IRVING "BABE" Was-
serman asks, Have you
tried the salad bar at
Stephenson Club, 1-75 and
10 Mile in Hazel Park?" ...
"It's great," says Babe.
