ABE KATZMAN Public Relations , * the addresses by Rabbi Irwin Groner, the Con- servative leader of Cong. Shaarey Zedek, and the honoree's brother, Judge Frederick J. Hertz of the Bankruptcy District Court of Chicago. Marvin Novick, president of the temple, in opening greetings to Dr. Hertz, an- nounced that the congrega- tion's gift to Dr. Hertz on the occasion of his anniversary was a trip to Israel for him and Mrs. Hertz. Presentations and ex- pressions of appreciation for his services also were pre- sented to Rabbi Hertz by: Lota Loraine Gard, Sister- hood; Harold Josephson; Mr. and Mrs. Gary Good- friend, Married Group; Nancy Klein, Young People's Society; Alice Got- tesman, Braille Group. There were expressions of appreciation for Flora Jane Winton, full-time volun- teer, for arranging the im- pressive evening's program. Deeply moved by the encomia, Rabbi Hertz re- sponded with a review of the progress attained by his congregation during his 25 years of services. He con- cluded with the recitation of the Shehekheyanu and the same blessing he recited during his inauguration 25 years ago. In his address greeting Dr. Hertz, Rabbi Groner said: "A grateful community salutes Rabbi Richard Hertz on the occasion of his Silver Jubilee at Temple Beth El. An eloquent and distinguished spokesman for Judaism, Dr. Hertz has guided his congregation to ever higher spiritual goals." "With compassion, faith and dedication he has served the cause of social justice; enriched the process of interfaith dialogue; pre- sented the Jewish message to the non-Jewish commu- nity; fought for the right of Soviet Jewry; and mobilized support for the state of Is- rael. Expressing "the love and affection" the congregation has for its spiritual leader, Robert N. Canvasser, who was toastmaster, praised Dr. Hertz for his courage in devoting himself to many vital causes affecting American and world Jewry. Unusual interest in an occasion like the honor ac- corded to Rabbi Hertz was shown by the participation in the program of Irving I. Katz, the temple's executive secretary. Katz described the progress that was at- tained by Beth El during the years of Rabbi Hertz's ministry. He pointed out inter alias "Foremost in Rabbi Hertz's career as senior rabbi of Beth El was the building, under his leader- ship, of the present magnifi- cent edifice of Beth El, a landmark in suburban De- troit. We did very well on this colossal undertaking. As of now, our mortgage has been reduced to a million- and-a-quarter dollars, quite an accomplishment, you w MANNY CHUONOW'S ) BETTER BUSINESS l will agree, for a capital ex- penditure exceeding $8 mil- lion."
