Anszel Reiss, president of the World Federation of Polish Jews, Stefan Grayek, chairman of the World Fed- eration of Jewish Partisans and Anti-Nazi Fighters and Judge Moshe Baisky, repre- sentative of the Yad Vas- hem Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem, agreed that the Jewish pavilion repre- Straight Talk with sented the first acknowl- edgement by the Polish authorities that the princi- pal victims at Auschwitz were Jews, not simply Polish citizens. But they complained that no Israeli flags were flown at the ceremonies and rejected the Polish explanation that there was no Israel when Auschwitz Jews met their death. They also noted that no Polish officials — neither those attending the cere- mony nor those in Warsaw — mentioned the estab- lishment of diplomatic rela- tions with Israel. Last year, Israel was ousted from the Asian Games and Football Asso- ciation in which the Arab states and China constitute the majority. Sixteen countries sup- ported Israel's application, including Sweden and West Germany. But that was far short of the 25 majority needed. The Soviet-led Com- munist bloc was opposed. Britain's abstention came as a surprise and may have influenced other countries. Rabbi Greenwald was ap- proached by Israeli Knesset member Samuel Flatto- Sharon to aid Marcus. Greenwald approached Rep. Benjamin Gilman (R-NY). The rabbi said the only other person involved was East German lawyer Wolfgang Vogel. The swap involved Marcus, American stu- dent Alan Van Norman who was held by East Germany, and Robert G. Thompson, a convicted spy serving a term at the federal prison at Lewis- burg, Pa. Rabbi Green- wald refused to release details of the swap.
