JNF Director Kaplan to be Cited

Percy Kaplan, who will be
honored "for his 25 years of
dedicated service to the
Jewish National Fund" as
executive director of the
Greater Detroit and Michi-
gan region, has devoted his
entire adult life to Jewish
causes.
Kaplan, who will be hon-
ored 6:30 p.m. May 10 at the
Zionist Cultural Center, is a
native of Winnipeg. He was
educated at the University
of Manitoba, St. Johns Col-
lege and at the Winnipeg
Hebrew Schools.
He was a leader of the
Canadian Young Judea,
founder of the youth di-
vision of the Canadian
Jewish Congress and active
in the reorganization of the
Toronto YMHA.
He was the librarian of
the Dr. Herzl Public Li-
brary in Winnipeg and
Young Judea Library in
Toronto. He was execu-
tive secretary of the
Western Canadian
Zionist Organization.
Kaplan edited the Jewish
Post in Winnipeg and the
Jewish Standard in Toronto
and was a staff member of
the Daily Yiddish Press in
Toronto.
He came to. Chicago in
1943 and joined that city's
Jewish Federation and
Jewish Welfare Fund. He

was the director of the Mid-
west and Southwest regions
of the Jewish Theological
Seminary and United
Synagogue of America from
1947 to 1950. Kaplan also
was the director of fund
raising at the Chicago Med-
ical School and was affil-
iated with the Israel Bond
Organization of Chicago.

He came to Detroit in
1953 at the urging of the
late William Hordes, who
was active in JNF here.

Kaplan has directed are
JNF dinners, landsman-
shaften events, women's
donors, Bnai Brith
Presidents Brunches, JNF
Month and JNF Sabbath
observances, the organiza-
tion of the Young Women of
JNF and the increase of par-
ticipation by Jewish schools
in the JNF Tu b'Shevat pro-
gram.
Under Kaplan's leader-
ship, Detroit JNF has insti-
tuted a program of giving
gifts of trees for Bnai and
Bnot Mitzva, anniversaries
and other occasions includ-
ing graduations and con-
firmations. Closer ties with
synagogues and temples
were maintained, a youth
program was started and
lawyers' receptions were
conducted.
Kaplan is a founder of
Hillel Day School and is a
board member of the Zionist
Organization of America —
Detroit District.
