Originally titled "La Vie
Devant Soi," "Madame
Rosa" is based on Emile
Ajar's best-selling novel.
"Madame Rosa" marks
Moshe Mizrahi's third film
to be selected as the official
entry of a country for Best
Foreign Film. His two ear-
lier nominations were "I
Love You Rosa" and "The
House on Chelouche
Street," both selected by Is-
rael.
In "Madame Rosa",
Mizrahi has an actress of
international acclaim
starring in the title role,
Simone Signoret. Ms.
Signoret won the Oscar
in 1959 for her perform-
ance in "Room at the
Top". She also has been
awarded the Cesar which
is the French equivalent
to the Oscar for her role
in. "Madame Rosa."
Ms. Signoret plays a
Jewish concentration camp
survivor and former prosti-
tute who in her later years
raises the children of young
prostitutes.
It is also the story of an
environment; the pimps,
the whores, the transves-
tites and the average people
who populate Belleville and
Madame Rosa's special re-
lationship with an Arab boy
whose background is
shrouded in mystery.
Starring also are Claude
Dauphin, Samy Ben Youb,
Michel Bat-Adam, and
Genevieve Fontanel.
