Only First Names Recorded
in Jewish Divorce Document

By RABBI SAMUEL FOX

(Copyright 1918, JTA, Inc.)

Only first names and no
surnames (i.e., family
names) are recorded in a
Jewish bill of divorce "Get."
Although there were
some authorities who pro-
posed the inclusion of fam-
ily names in a Jewish bill of
divorce this was not ac-
cepted.
Since Jewish law has the
technical insistence of in-
cluding all aliases,
nicknames of sorts both
original and vernacular
names, etc. it considered
that the inclu
sion of these
names is enough to make an

divorced women choose to

Another reason stated
by some authorities (e.g.
Rabbi Moshe Feinstein)
claims that possible er-
rors might ensue in the
spelling if surnames were
used. Some also claim
that since a variety of
persons share the same
surname in the family
(but never the same first
name in the immediate
family), confusion may
result.

Surnames were generally
not used by Jews prior to the
Middle Ages—thus the orig-
