AMERICAN JEWISH HISTORY: Jewish history is
the oldest complete history in the world because the ancient
Hebrews have understood the value of permanence in pre-

of paying proper attention to American Jewish history and
of giving proper support to institutions engaged in research
of American Jewish history. There are books by historians
on episodes or personalities in early American Jewish his-
tory, but there is not a history textbook for Jewish schools.
THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY: The American Jewish
Historical Society — now 85 years in existence — is seeking

to cope with this problem. Highly respected among Jewish

the American-Jewish community as a whole more con-
scious of its history in this country.
Its library has about 60,000 volumes, several million
pages of manuscripts, hundreds of original documents,
memorabilia, and a collection of pictures, portraits and
objects of art relating to American Jewish history. The

society also has important collections of materials dealing
with prominent American Jews and American Jewish or-
ganizations. It is the repository for the archives of such
organizations as the Council of Jewish Federations and
Welfare Funds, the American Jewish Congress, the
Synagogue Council of America . It has an extensive Yid-

CEMENTING JEWISH CONTINUITY: There is no
doubt that the American Jewish Historical Society will
come more and more to the forefront in the American
Jewish communal life.
"Remember the Past to Safeguard the Future" is an old
Jewish slogan. The American Jewish Historical Society
Fred Rapoport -- David Fealk -- Albert Barkia
follows this slogan. Its official seal carries the motto in
Hebrew, "Zekhor Yemot Olam" ("Remember the Ancient

Times"). In preserving American Jewish history, it serves

the memory of the Jewish people as a whole. It also serves to
cement the continuity of American Jews of all generations.
