The Knesset Laborite Yit-
zhak Navon as Israel's fifth
president. He will succeed
Ephraim Katzir whose
four-year term expires next
month. Katzir declined to
stand for re-election for per-
sonal reasons.

Navon was the only can-
didate for the prestigious
but largely ceremonial
office. Twenty blank ballots
were cast in the election,
presumably in protest by
disgruntled members of
Likud's Liberal Party wing
and a few others who had
favored Liberal Party
leader Elimelech Rimalt.

Rimalt withdrew his candi-
dacy last month.
Nevertheless, Navon, 57,
a one-time school teacher
and former political secre-
tary to the late Premier
David Ben-Gurion, was
elected by the largest major-
ity ever given a presidential
candidate. He will resign
from the Labor Alignment's
Knesset faction before he
takes office in the middle of
May.

Navon sought the
presidency five years ago
but was rejected by the
Labor Party leadership
in favor of Katzir, a non-
political scientist with a
world-wide reputation in
the field of bio-chemistry.

Dunant was born May
8, 1828. His birthday has
been observed world-
wide as World Red Cross
Day. Throughout his life
Dunant was involved
with helping those who
were less fortunate than
him. His amassed wealth
was dissipated because
of the time he gave to var-
ious needy causes. In
1901 he was awarded the

"further emphasize the
serious intention of the
Egyptian people to estab-

He said the American Red

admitting MDA but had
done nothing to expedite the
matter.

Mordechai Gur stepped
down Sunday as Chief of
Staff of Israel's armed forces
and turned over the post to
his successor, Gen. Rafael
Eitan.

The formal transfer was
carried out in two brief
ceremonies in Jerusalem,
one at General Headquar -
ters and the other at Pre-
mier Menahem Begin's
office, attended by Defense
Minister Ezer Weizman.
Begin hailed both com-
manders, noting that Gur's
four-year term as Chief of
Staff began with the task of
rebuilding the army after
the Yom Kippur War. He
expressed the hope that
Eitan's term will witness no
more wars.
