THE DETROIT 161198 .1i199 Another Passover Symphony Much that is irretrievable By GEORGES A. PERLA My context Passover once again The continuity that defines And the candles are lit And in joy we recall how the Angel of Death spared our The immemorial mulch on which consciousness thrives My People house Is buried in the fields of Poland How we took our first steps Into freedom And I Find myself It is indeed a time to remember A man The youngest one will say the fateful words Incomplete And we will drink the consecrated wine Reaching across the tides of time to hold our brother's hands Severed From the life lines of my ancestral roots We will be Jews again The villages once graced with song But on our walls Are overgrown with grass In dustry frames Mere pasture for the beasts The bearded Patriarch -.- The city streets Our grandfather Bent to the rhythms of their dance for a millenium Surrounded by his sons his daughters and his wife Are willfully sundered from their memory And the children Who would have been our contemporaries .. . And my children And my children's children The frame is black Will not immerse their alienated souls into the bath Oh my People Inspiriting Forgotten Of ancestral existence But for the vivid hue of Poland's wildflowers So that they might commune with our Fathers Were you not more precious And recognizing them Than the dying whales Be more truly themselves More irreplaceable But on this Passover I shall remember Than the martyred dolphins Other things The baby seals? I shall recall another Passover Passover is a time for me to conjure up When in despair Those Knowing at last I never truly forget That it was time Who live To die Shadowy shapes In dignity In the recesses of my soul For life had been cherished Absent A Gift From the matrix of my living But there was no Spirit to consecrate In Nineteen Forty-Three 355-1590 Yobr One Stop Shop They rose And took the torch to the ghetto Their final act A solemn Covenant And bequeathed me the flame that gives me life 9avorite 9avorAs CENTERPIECES ORIGINALLY DESIGNED — FRESH OR ARTIFICIAL — FAVORS INVITATIONS, STATIONERY-20% OFF BEV KURTIS DORSEY MENKEN DORIS CORNFIELD The Manufacturers and Distributors of NEW ERA POTATO CHIPS are pleased to announce that again this year, as in the past, their Superior Quality Chips will be moth natil= KOSHER FOR PASSOVER 1978-5738 These are the only Potato Chips made in Michigan Kosher for Passover, under the supervision of the UNION OF ORTHODOX JEWISH CONGREGATIONS OF AMERICA Available at your local FARMER JACK, CHATHAM SUPERMARKET, SHOPPING CENTER MARKETS AND FINER FOOD STORES THROUGHOUT MICHIGAN - - ' • - - And so this Passover I shall rededicate myself To life The life that they consigned To me My People's life And I shall not forget Lest I also forget from whence I come For they now live only Through the stoking of my anger and grief And I shall not forgive For they died in anguish And agony But I shall pray Tenderly call their names This Passover we marked our house The Black Angel once again has spared us Let us rejoice! In this dawning of spring I shall repeat the names of those who died With tenderness And be nourished on their ashes And arise once again A Man.
