Federation Women's Spring Forum Focuses
on Jewish Women 's Consciousness Raising

Dawn Schuman returned
to Detroit last week to do a
little consciousness raising.
The Jewish educator from
Chicago presented "The
Jewish Woman: A Chang-
ing Portrait" for the Jewish
Welfare Federation
Women's Division Spring
Forum at the Jewish Com-
munity Center.
She had come, she said,
"to raise our thinking about
ourselves as Jewish
women."
Addressing her "class"
of more than 300, Ms.
Schuman quoted 14
Jewish women, from
Bible days to the present,
and asked her audience
to match the speaker
with the saying. Most of
the Forum audience
could match only a few.
Ms. Schuman then briefly
described each of those
she had quoted.
Ms. Schuman then asked
her audience to name the
Jewish woman — living or
dead — who they regarded
as a role model. Though re-
plies ranged from Sarah and
Ruth of the Bible to Golda
Meir, most of the women
admitted they had not
sought to emulate any par-
ticular Jewish woman.
Ms. Schuman blamed the
lack of models on Jewish
education's failure to teach
about Jewish women in his-
tory.
Following Ms. Schuman's
morning presentation, the
audience was divided into
workshops on Israel, family,
community, tzedaka and
the new morality.
Later, she urged her lis-
teners to consider all of
their problems in life —
from occupational to so-
cial — as Jewish prob-
lems. "There is no reason
to separate anything you
do from Jewish life," she

JERUSALEM—A Dutch
woman who hid Jews from
the Nazis during World War
II was honored at Yad Vas-
hem with its Medallion for
Righteous Gentiles.

Gretje Balder, with her
husband Jacob, were mem-
bers of the Dutch under-
ground. They hid five Jews
in their home throughout
the war, found hiding places
for others and provided
them with forged docu-
ments and food coupons.
In 1944, Balder was bet-
rayed to the Nazis and exe-
cuted, but his wife contin-
ued their underground
work.

Causes Flap

LONDON

A National
Film Theater showing of
propaganda film "The
Palestinians," partly fi-
nanced by and starring
Vanessa Ftedgrave, ended in
a shouting match recently
with many in the audience
walking out of the theater.

The film's director, Roy
Battersby, said the film was
not widely circulated be-
cause "you know who owns
the cinema."

He said he "gloried" in the
PLO raid near Tel Aviv
March 11 in which 33 Is-
raeli civilians were killed.
