The Phone Company may
go out of business and be-
come the Fun Company.
That is, if it can get over
some of its present troubles.
You never can tell. The New
York Telephone Company
some time back initiated
the Dial-A-Joke idea. If you
feel like having a laugh, you
dial a given number and a
phonograph-like machine
tells you a joke.
Henny
Comedian
Youngman, famous for his
"one-liners" supplied the
jokes for the first month and
the company began getting
300,000 calls a day. That's
$30,000 extra every day.
Even for a big telephone
company, that's a good deal
of money. But they began
having troubles. Youngman
thought he was worth more
than the $2,500 a month
they paid him.
Now the phone company
is having trouble with Joey
Adams. In this case, it's not
the amount of money, but
because they are all Carter
jokes. There was the one, for
instance, about Amy learn-
ing to ski, so she could go
down hill with her father.

said that the Carter
brothers were the greatest
act since Martin and Lewis
Jimmy worrying
with
about the country running
out of oil and his brother
worrying that it may run
out of beer.
You don't need the tele-
phone company to supply
the jokes. The columnist of
the high brow weekly, the
New Republic, writes of the
many fashionable stores in
London now catering to the
oil rich Arab visitors. Many
of these fashion shops have
signs in the windows —
"Arabic spoken here." A
Jewish shop has placed a
sign in its window, "Yiddish
Geredt." (Yiddish is spo-
ken.)
Israel seems to be the only
protection a good Christian
can depend on these days.
The correspondent in Leba-
non for the New York Post
writes of the regret many
Christians in Lebanon have
because of the pending de-
parture of the Israeli troops
replaced by United Nations
soldiers. In the past, the UN
troops, according to the
Christians, have only
helped the Moslems.
Way back in Bible days,
Israel and Lebanon also
seemed to have gotten along
very well. The name Leba-
non is kin to the Hebrew
word lavan, meaning white,
for the snow covered moun-
tains of Lebanon. The Yid-
dish word for moon,
levaneh, is probably a de-
rivative of the same word.
The silvery moon is also
white.

Germany Charges Nee-Nazis,
Leader's Court Case Dropped

BONN (JTA) — Four
young, alleged neo-Nazis
aged 17 to 24 have been
charged by the State Pro-
secutor of Lueneburg, north
Germany, with public in-
citement. They allegedly
used the symbols of organ-
izations deemed hostile to
the state and damaged
property.
A statement by the Jus-
tice Ministry of Lower
Saxony said the four were
members of a U.S.-directed
group known as the Na-
tional Socialist Workers
Party of Germany
(NSDAP-OA). The OA
stands for auslandsorgani-
zation or foreign organiza-
tion.
From April to November
last year they "spread Nazi
and anti-Semitic thinking"
by means of slogans painted
on walls, posters and leaf-
lets, the charges said.
Meanwhile, a
Frankfurt court has
dropped similar proceed-
ings against Gerhard
Lauck, head of the
NSDAP-AO, for allegedly
spreading Nazi prop-
aganda.

Artists Committee
for Zionism Forms

NEW YORK — A full-
page advertisement in the
pages of Variety, (April 12)
the weekly journal of the
entertainment industry,
has launched a national
"Artists' Committee for
Zionism." The chairman of
the committee, which is still
in formation, is the
entertainer, columnist and
author, Joey Adams.
According to the
president of the Zionist
Organization of America,
Rabbi Joseph P. Sternstein,
Adams was approached by
the ZOA with the request
that he help organize some
kind of artist response to the
Academy Award remarks of
Vanessa Redgrave.
"The basic statement of
the Artists' Committee on
Zionism," added Rabbi
Sternstein, "is that the
principals support Zionism
and recognize that it means,
in simple terms, support for
Israel's right to exist.
Among 'the individuals
signing the advertisement
in Variety were Joey and
Cindy Adams, Clive
Barnes, Dr. Joyce Brothers,
Red Buttons, Myron Cohen,
Virginia Graham, Lionel
Hampton, George Jessel,
Jan Peerce, Lee and Anna
Strasberg, William B.
Williams and Shelley Win-
ters.

The Frankfurt State Pro-
secutor said there was "in-
sufficient evidence" to press
the charges against Lauck
and that a legal six-month
limit on the hearing of cases
in matters concerning of-
fensive publications had
since lapsed.
