Israel Announces New Lebanon
Withdrawal for Waldheim Visit
TEL AVIV (JTA) — Is-
rael will carry out a new- ,
major pull-back of its forces
in south Lebanon within the
next two weeks. The with-
drawal, a gesture to United
Nations Secretary General
Kurt Waldheim, who ended
a two-day visit to Israel, will
bring Israeli troops to the
original limits of the
security belt which was the
stated objective when
Lebanon was invaded
March 15.
The security belt has an
average depth of 10
kilometers (about six miles)
running the full length of/
the Israel-Lebanon border.
The retirement of Israeli
forces to that area will mean
the evacuation of the region
surrounding the terrorist-
held port of Tyre and
Rashidiyeh refugee camps.
Waldheim appeared
pleased with the results of
his visit when he took off
after a last-minute conver-
sation with Foreign Minis-
ter Moshe Dayan at Ben-
Gurion airport. He had
achieved his stated objec-
tive of hastening Israel's
withdrawal from South
Lebanon.
Tuesday night Wal-
dheim attended a dinner
given by Justice Minister
Shmuel Tamir at the
Jerusalem Hilton Hotel.
He told reporters that he
had received a number of
proposals frofn Israeli
leaders which he would
discuss on his return to

UN headquarters in New
York. He declined to say
what the proposals were.
He confirmed that he
would ask the Security
Council for authority to
enlarge the United Nations
interim force (UNIFIL) in
south Lebanon to make sure
it is capable of discharging
its assignments.
Waldheim said reports of
clashes between Norwegian
UNIFIL troops and the PLO
were exaggerated. Before
Waldheim's visit, Dayan
had written to him express-
ing concern over reports
that the terrorists would re-
turn to south Lebanon to
renew attacks against Is-
rael.
Before arriving in Israel,
Waldheim met with
Lebanese leaders and PLO
leader Yasir Arafat. Arafat
promised a "moratorium"
on terror until Israel fully
withdraws.
Israeli Chief of Staff Gen.
Mordecai Gur denied re-
ports that 1,000 terrorists
have slipped back into south
Lebanon. He also denied
that 1,000 civilians were
killed.
Gur estimated civilian
casualties at 150-200.
USS Nimitz Ends
Visit to Israel
HAIFA (JTA) — The
90,000 ton USS Nimitz,
Americ'a's largest nuclear-
powered aircraft carrier,
put to sea last week after a
five-day courtesy call at
Haifa which her comman-
der, Read Adm. Robert F.
Schoultz, described as "an
experience never to be for-
gotten" and "illustrative of
the close ties and mutual es-
teem that exist between the
U.S. and Israel."
During her stay, the giant
ship played host to Premier
Menahem Begin, Deputy
Premier Yigael Yadin, De-
fense Minister Ezer Weiz-
man, Israel's top army,
navy and air force comman-
ders, hundreds of Israeli
navy and airmen and sev-
eral thousand civilians.
Begin invited a number of
Jewish officers from the
carrier's 6,000-man com-
plement to a Sabbath recep-
tion at his home in
Jerusalem and a tour of the
city.
The Nimitz, more than
1,000-feet long and over
100-feet broad, remained
anchored in Haifa Bay dur-
ing her visit. She was too
large to enter the port.
When she weighed anchor,
the signal flags on her
masthead spelled out the
words "Shalom, L'Hitraot."
Funds Needed
to Halt Decline
JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Unless the government re-
leases more funds for the
universities, Israel might
become a third-rate scien-
tific power within five
years, Hebrew University
rector Gideon Czapski
warned at the opening ses-
sion of the university's 40th
annual board of governors
meeting.
