TEL AVIV —A crisis has
occured in the Israeli Na-
tional Theater "Hahima",
which is celebrating its 60th
anniversary. The crisis is
not connected with finan-
cial difficulties but with art
problems, which are
dangerous for a theater.
When the theater was
founded 60 years ago in
Moscow, it consisted of ar-
tists and people who be-
lieved in their mission for
the Hebrew stage — art.
One of the most popular ar-
tists of the theater is Hana
Rowina, who will reach age
90 this year. -
The theater has passed
several crises, financial and

declare it as a national the-
ater and had taken upon it-
self the responsibility for its
upkeep. This decision costs
Israel 10 million pounds a

year.
The minister for educa-
tion and culture nomi-
nated a committee of
trustees to control the ac-
tivity of the theater under
the chairmanship of
Moshe Zanbar. Par-
ticipating in the commit-
tee are important indus-
trialists, former high of-
ficers and writers. There
are no members of the ar-
tistic collective of the
theater.
Zanbar is a very capable
financial expert. He has
been for years the director of
the Israeli National Bank,
but the artists of Habima
think that, for dealing with
problems of a theater, other
qualifications are needed.
After two years, the art
director of Habima Shimon
Finkel left and in his place
came a new art director,
Josse Jizraeli. He also left
after two years and in his
place came artist Shlomo

David Levin without con-
sulting the artists. liar-
Shavit resigned after an ar-
gument with the commit-
tee. He was of the opinion,
that a new ensemble of
young artists should be pre-
pared for the theater. The
committee of trustees
thought that owing to
economical reasons it is bet-
ter jiot to engage a young

ensemble, but instead hire
new artists each season.
The artists read about
their newly appointed art
director in the press. They
were embittered. They ar-
gued, that they were treated
like employees. A serious
situation has arisen. No-
body is ready to take over
the management of the the-
ater. The old guard van-
ished and there is no young
guard to take over. The ar-
tists argue that a national
theater is not a private bus-
iness. It must be an example
for a successful ensemble
and repertoire, which suits
the whole Israeli popula-
tion.
The new art director is
a young regisseur. He
learned his profession in
the U.S. He has to take in
to account that the thea-
ter has not succeeded in
establishing a theatrical
tradition. He has to take
into account the many
groups of new immig-
rants. Levin, who is a
kind of avant garde-
regisseur has been the
regisseur of a perfor-
mance of the "Queen of
the Bathroom", a comedy
written by his brother
some years ago,, which
has aroused severe pub-
lic criticism. It looks like
the committees of trus-
tees had not taken into
account all this, when it
appointed him as new art
director.
The artists demand that
the minister for culture
nominate a new committee
of trustees and review the
decision of the new art di-
rector. They demand that a
third of the members of the
new committee of trustees
come from the artists collec-
tive. Only such steps could
calm the emotions of the ar-
tists.
The artists collective is
dissatisfied with the deci-
sion- of the committee be-
cause they wanted the new
art director to be one of the
ensemble. Levin has ex-
pressed his regret, that he
was a regisseur. His origin
is from a religious home and
he wishes to infuse tradi-
tional Jewish spirit in the
national theater.
The committee hopes that
Levin will take over the art
affairs of the theater in Sep-
tember and that the emo-
