Maritime Strike Ends, El Al Operations Still Suspended

MACK PITT
ORCHESTRA

An agreement between
the shipping companies and
the seamen's union was
signed last week, but if Is-
rael's maritime communi-
cations are functioning
again, its international air
services remained grounded
for the fifth day.
The El Al management
suspended operations last,
week as a result of a wildcat
work stoppage by mainte-
• nance workers and is de-
manding new, individual
contracts
with
all
employees. The workers op-
pose this and are supported
by Histadrut.
They were joined by
travel agents in applying
to a Tel Aviv Labor Court
for an injunction against
management on grounds
that the latter unilater-
ally and illegally broke
its labor contracts. But
the court refused to grant
an injunction and set a
new hearing. It ordered

the workers back to their
jobs.
El Al has refused to lift
the suspension pending new
labor contacts. However, it
has asked employees in its
computer and reservations
departments to return to
work to facilitate the trans-
fer of El Al passengers to

foreign' carriers.

Fear has been expressed
that the El Al shutdown will
affect the entire tourist in-
dustry which depends heav-
ily on the Passover influx of
visitors.
Histadrut, which has al-
ways supported manage-
ment against wildcat
strikes and work stoppages,
says now that the airline is
solely responsible for the
present situation.
Meanwhile, the black-
out of news on radio and
television continued for
the second week. The
Broadcast Authority has
refused to be bound by
the wage agreements that

In London, an invita-
tion to Miss Redgrave to
address the Cambridge
University Students
Union has been with-
drawn because of her
statement about "Zionist
hoodlums."
The president of the
Zionist Organization of
America, Rabbi Joseph P.
Sternstein, accused the
British actress of "blatant
stupidity" and "confused
morality in her vulgar use
of the phrase 'Zionist hood-
lums.' "
Sternstein said he sent a
telegram to the Federal
Communications Commis-
sion urging them to investi-
gate this matter and deter-
mine how it may be possible
to prevent "the uninvited
intrusion into our homes of
political philosophies of-
fered under the guise of en-
tertainment."

Redgrave Comment Draws
Criticism of Varied Groups

NEW YORK' Actress.
Vanessa Redgrave is draw-
ing bitter criticism from
Jewish and non-Jewish
groups for her remark about
"Zionist hoodlums" made
last week at the Academy
Awards presentations.
In New York, Theodore
Bikel, chairman of the na-
tional governing council of
the American Jewish Con-
gress, said Ma. Redgrave's
"public espousal of the PLO
and her artistic and finan-
cial involvement in a PLO
propaganda film brand her
as one who condones the
murder of civilians, the de-
struction of the Jewish state
and the end of the Jewish
people ....
"We repudiate the disrup-
tive and counter-productive
tactics of such groups as the
Jewish Defense League.
But our rejection of the JDL
does not mitigate our revul-
sion at the public support
which Vanessa Redgrave

C. jhoian,

ended the recent news-
paper strike.
Broadcast journalists
have demanded the same
increases.
In another area of labor
strife, the teachers union
warned that unless advance
payments were forthcom-
ing, it would call a strike of
indefinite duration after the
Passover holidays.
