THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

A PESACH MESSAGE

From The Lubavitcher Rebbe

The festival of Pesach calls for early and elaborate prep-
arations to make the Jewish home fitting for the great
festival. It is not physical preparedness alone that is re-
quired of us, but also spiritual preparedness —for in the life
of the Jew the physical and spiritual are closely linked
together, especially in the celebration of our Sabbath and
festivals.

On Pesach we celebrate the liberation of the Jewish
people from Egyptian slavery and, together with it, the
liberation from, and negation of the ancient Egyptian sys-
tem and way of life, the "Abominations of Egypt." Thus we
celebrate our physical liberation together with our
spiritual freedom. Indeed, there cannot be one without the
other: there can be no real freedom without accepting the
precepts of our Torah guiding our daily life; pure and holy
life eventually leads to real freedom.

It is said, "In every generation each Jew should see him-
self as though he personally had been liberated from
Egypt." This is to say, that thelesson of Pesa ch has always a
timely message for the individual Jew. '1;ie story of Pesach
is the story of the special Divine Providence which alone
determines the fate of our people. What is happening in the
outside world need not affect us; we might be singled out for
suffering, G-d forbid, amid general prosperity, and likewise
for safety amid a general plague or catastrophe. The story
of our enslavement and liberation of which Pesach tells us
gives ample illustration of this. For the fate of our people is
determined by it adherence to G-d and his Prophets.

This lesson is emphasized by the three principal symbols
of the Seder, concerning which our Sages said that unless
the Jew explains their significance he has not observed the
Seder fittingly: Pesach, Matza and Morror. Using these
symbols in their chronological order and in accordance with
their Haggadah explanation we may say: the Jew can avoid
Morror (bitterness of life) only through Pesach (G-d's spe-
cial care 'passing over' and saving the Jewish homes even
in the midst of the greatest plague), and Matza — then the
very catastrophe and the enemies of the Jews will work for
the benefit of the Jews, driving them in great haste out of
"Mitzraim", the place ofperversion and darkness, and plac-
ing them under the beam of light and holiness.

A Special Report

OAK PARK: A grand Megillah-reading and masquerade
party took place at the Lubavitcher Center. With more
than 300 people in attendance, Haman's name was
graggered into oblivion by noisemakers of every shape and
size, and everyone, adults and children, had a wonderful
time. Rabbi Betzalel Gottlieb headed the celebrations.

On Tuesday,_ April 18
("Yud-Alef Nissan"; 11 days in
Nissan) Chabad Lubavitch of
Detroit will join with the
worldwide Chabad movement
in celebrating the 76th birth-
day of the Lubavitcher Rebbe,
Rabbi Menachem M. Schneer-
son.
Born in Russia, the Rebbe is
today a dominant figure not
only in Jewish communal lead-
ership but also in education and
in Jewish philosophy. He was a
student at the Sorbonne in
Paris and later at the Univer-
sity of Berlin. He came to the
United States in 1941, a year
after his father-in-law, Rabbi
Joseph Isaac Schneerson, his
predecessor as "Rebbe," was
brought over by his followers to
New York from bomb-torn
Warsaw. Following the death of
his father-in-law in 1950, he
was proclaimed Rebbe. Since
then he has headed the
worldwide Lubavitcher move-
ment and has led it from
strength to strength.
The Lubavitcher Rebbe is the
phenomenal Torah scholar and
sage of our generation whose
birthday will bring new deter-
mination and enthusiasm in
the spreading of Torah and
Judaism throughout the world.
The Rebbe will address an ex-
pected crowd of ten thousand
followers on Tuesday night in
New York. A simultaneous
broadcast of the address can be
heard live at the Lubavitcher
Center in Oak Park. Call 548-
2666 for exact time of the
broadcast. There is also a spe-
cial delegation leaving to New
York Monday evening, April
17.

of the Passover festival. One should not forget to check the
car, office, the desk and drawers in the office, as well as the
entire home, to be sure that there is no Chometz there.
Clothes pockets and children's clothes should also be
checked. Women should check their pocket books.
Vacuum-cleaner bags that were used should be discarded.
If one has vacuum-cleaner bags that are permanent, then
care should be taken that they are thoroughly cleaned and
put away with the rest of the Chometz that will be sold.

LUBAVITCHER
REBBE
URGES USE OF
SH'MURA MATZO

The Lubavitcher Rebbe
K"V'tit• has urged that
hand-made, round
"Shmurah Matzoh" be used
for the Passover holiday.

The word "Shmurah"
means "watched" and is an
apt description of the Mat-
zoh, because the wheat used
in their baking is carefully
protected against any con-
tact with water from the
moment of harvest on.
Water would cause leaven-
ing and thus disqualify the
wheat for use on Passover.
These Shmurah Matzohs
are round in form, are
kneaded and shaped by
hand, and are baked under
strict supervision, avoiding
any possibility of leavening
during the baking process.

The Rebbe has called for
the renewal of the time-
honored custom that all
rabbis and spiritual leaders
supply members of their
congregation or community
with these special matzohs
for at least the "kazayis,"
the minimum amount of
Matzoh required by Jewish
law to be eaten on each of
the first two nights of Pas-
sover.

In consonance with the
Rebbe's request, Lubavitch
organizations and emis-
saries the world over are ac-
tively engaged in a cam-
paign to supply as many
Jews as possible with these
Matzohs.

LUBAVITCH CENTERS
LAUNCH CHOMETZ
SALE CAMPAIGN

Homeowners may dele-
gate the power of attorney
to Rabbi Betzalel Gottlieb to
perform the mitzva of sel-
ling the - Chometz-
according to a legal contract
drawn up for the rabbi of the
Lubavitcher Center.

The document, on this
page, conforms with the
precept that a Jew must sell
all bread and leavened pro-
ducts that remain in his
home or-on his property for
Passover. The homeowner
locks away the Chometz
that he wishes to sell in a
specified place in his house;
then the rabbi acts as in-
termediary to transact a
sale of these Chometz pro-
ducts to a non-Jew.

For the duration of the
Passover festival this sale is
absolutely legal and bind-
ing according to Torah as
well as state law; the
Chometz simply does not be-
long to the homeowner, al-
though it is In his house.
(After Passover the transac-
t: an is reversed and the
Chometz again becomes the
property of the homeowner.

Rabbi Gottlieb said the
mitzva is often neglected
because it is considered
incon ,/enient. For this
reason, he has sought the
legal assistance of sev-
eral attorneys, who have ....
drawn up a "Delegation
of Power of Attorney for
Sale of Chometz."
