The Remarkable Harry Orlinsky: A Paean on His 70th
Birthday . . . 'Protocols' Continue to Serve as Guide for
USSR Workers in Soviet-Promulgated Anti-Semitism

Silence Can Be Degrading . . . People of Faith Must Speak Fearlessly When Truth Is Abused

An anti-Semitic slur by a PLO-minded actress gave notoriety to a TV show that
marked the presentation of the Oscars for best performers and directors in the movie
industry.
One important lesson must be learned from that occurrence: that people with faith in
truth must be fearless in striving for justice. Paddy Chayefsky, Alan King and others
expressed their resentment over an insult that was directed at Jewry by a woman who
had already given encouragement to the would-be destroyers of Israel. They showed
courage in their refusal to be silent. This is the lesson for other American Jews, for Jewish
academics, for leaders in many fields of endeavor.
Chayefsky had done it before: he condemned Newsweek's anti-Semitic cartoon. Alan
King never permitted a slur at fellow Jews to go unchallenged. What about the thousands
of members of faculties in American universities? How about the prominent people in

science and literature? A situation has to be very menacing before the handful who do
assert themselves will speak out.

The craving for help in defense of Israel and in opposition to anti-Semitism applies as
well to Christians. There are many in their ranks who are not silent. The National
Conference of Christians and Jews and its Detroit Round Table acts commendably in
support of its program for justice, as the David Hyatt letter in this issue indicates. It is
vitally important that more Jews, prominent authors, movie and stage stars, those whose
names are well known to the American public, should not be silent. The media-have been
unfair to Israel and her leaders. They must not stymie justice for Israel.

Chayefsky, King and others who speak out are offering a slogan: "I shall not be silent."
Let it take root.
