Throughout the year famous musicians from around the world are in- vited for periods ranging from two weeks to a month (with accommodation at Mishkenot Shaananim) to tutor promising Israeli musicians, both profes- sional and non-professional. International names such as Isaac Stern, Pablo Cas- als, Gina Bachauer, Leonard Rose, Claude Frank, Alexander Schneider, Eugene Istomin, Zubin Mehta, and William Sternberg have given their time. advice and, most im- portantly, their encour- agement. During their stays, the musicians conduct work- shops and classes on both an individual and group basis including chamber groups, orchestra sections and en- tire orchestras; all sessions are videotaped for the music center's archives. Visiting musicians also meet with other Israeli artists and thinkers in a two-way cul- tural exchange. One of the more exciting seminars took place with Dr. William Revelli, the "most important 'band man' " in the United States. Children from all over Is- rael who regularly play in youth bands were selected to come to Jerusalem for a week-long seminar on band music. An honor's band was chosen to demonstrate the techniques about which Dr. Revelli spoke. The music center also serves as the videotaping and dissemination head- quarters for Israeli music. A number of very high-quality films have been produced in Jerusalem and recorded in the music center's studio. "Spring in Jerusalem" with Isaac Stern and "Conflict in Harmony" with Leonard Rose and Claude Frank have been shown on many television net- works world-wide. British critics said "Music in Jerusalem" with Pablo Casals and Isaac Stern was the "finest music program ever shown on the BBC." A videotaped series enti- tled "The Man Behind the Music" is also being pro- duced. In each tape, a world famous musician infor- mally discusses his philosophy of music. Before his death, the music center recorded 14 hours of price- less discussion with Pablo Casals-Such tapes are then edited and distributed ab- road. Other educational tapes on music for schools and in- stitutes are also made and sold. Profits from all of these enterprises go toward run- ning the music center. No municipal funds have been spent either to build or to run the center. Several international re- cord companies use this "world center for the record- ing of chamber music" for commercial recording. "Four Seasons with Isaac Stern" is among the well- known records recorded here. In addition, a project is currently under-way to re- cord Jewish ethnic music as part of its archives and for distribution to interested institutions. Israel Radio works with the music center to record Israel composers and see to it that their~ work is distributed ab- road to help them gain recognition. Three thousand years ago King David the "Sweet Singer of Israel" put Jerusalem on the music map of the world. Today, she is again being appreciated for her music, thanks, in no small part to the Jerusalem Music Center. Israel Jubilee Marked in Miami ' Southfield, Mich. 48075 CITY Israeli musicians would be able to meet and work pri- vately with the world's foremost musical talents. Mayor Teddy Kollek and the Jerusalem Foun- dation readily accepted Stern's Idea and guided it through the preparatory stages. A grant from the British Rothschild Foun- dation made possible the restoration of a gracious 19th Century stone build- ing adjoining the already famous artists' retreat, Mishkenot Shaananim. In November, 1975 the Jerusalem Music Center opened complete with a technically perfect multi- purpose two-story recording studio, electronic control rooms, several practice rooms and administrative offices. To assure maximal recording conditions and accoustics all support sys- tems were placed in an adja- cent building. The music center was out- fitted with the best equip- ment available anywhere in the world and no detail overlooked. For example, in the studio the wall panels revolve so that reverbera- tion time can be adjusted for either videotaping discus- sions of music theory of re- cording soloists or chamber groups or orchestras. The lighting equipment used in videotape sessions is the finest. The music center is the only technically perfect re- cording studio in the Middle East and Asia and is eagerly booked by international musicians. The music center does not compete with any of Israel's music academies or teachers.
