THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
Privilege and Responsibility
Let Us Strengthen the Hands of All Our Brethren
For the sake of Zion I will not be silent,
For the sake of Jerusalem I will not be still"
(Isaiah 62.1)
People by making a contribution, commensurate with personal means, to
the 1978-5738 Allied Jewish Campaign-Israel Emergency Fund!
We are about to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the Third Jewish
Commonwealth, the State of Israel. This generation, which witnessed the
unparalleled calamity of the destruction of one third of our people, was
also privileged to experience the rebirth of the Jewish State in the land of
our ancestors. Much has been accomplished, miracles too numerous to
count! The exiled have been gathered; their attainments have become our
pride, our hope, our destiny.
At the same time, we are aware that our gifts help Jewish people here
and abroad to lead better lives: in our nation and community we aid the
sick, provide food, shelter and clothes for the needy, teach Torah to the
young, assure a livelihood for many and establish and sustain recreational
centers. We protect our people from insults and infamy and build healthy
relations with fellow Americans who support the cause of democracy,
brotherhood and peace.
Yet, the political and economic future of Medinat Yisrael is still in doubt.
Only with the work of our hands, when prospered by the Rock of All Ages,
with the gifts of our hearts, the sacrifices of our persons, will Israel
become secure and self-sufficient and no longer depend on the fragile
support of other nations.
Our offerings will also encourage those Jews still oppressed in lands of
tyranny and spiritual darkness that the time of their release is at hand.
Whether victims of Soviet intolerance, Arab fanaticism or residual fas-
cism, these Jews will know that they are not alone.
Therefore, we, the Rabbis of Metropolitan Detroit, call upon the mem-
bers of our congregations, indeed, upon every Jewish man and woman,
young and old, to record his or her name in the Book of the Life of our
We are a privileged generation. We must meet our responsibility.
