UN Double Standard Blasted

WASHINGTON — "Ev-
ery year, there are 25,000
complaints to the United
Nations about violations of
human rights. They are
surpressed, they are buried,
and nothing is done about
them. Not a single one has
come before the General As-
sembly," stated Dr. William
Korey, director of Bnai
Brith International policy
research.
Dr. Korey spoke on "Un-
ited Nations Human
Rights: Today and Tomor-
row" at the Bnai Brith
Women International
Biennial Convention, in Los
Angeles.
He recalled when Yasir
Arafat, PLO leader, wear-
ing gun in holster, received
a standing ovation at the
United Nations. "Bnai
Brith is committed to the
proposition that the UN

must cease to be an instru-
ment of a double standard of
morality," he told the BBW
delegates.
"The Jews, because
they are Jews," he said,
"have never been able to
take their right to live as a
natural right."
Following Dr. Korey's
address, an audio-visual
slide presentation entitled,
"You Shall Not Stand Idly
By" on the subject of human
rights was previewed by the
delegates. The presenta-
tion, narrated by actress
Gretchen Wyler, was intro-
duced with a reading by ac-
tress Jane Wyatt.
The delegates cheered
when they heard that Dina
Beylina, one of the Soviet
Jewry refuseniks on whose
behalf they had been work-
ing in BBW's Project
Yachad, has been released
and is now at an absorption
center in Israel. They re-
ceived the news at a Soviet
Jewry breakfast where they
were addressed by Burton
Levinson, vice president of
the National Conference on
Soviet Jewry.

Peace Groups Grow in Israel

TEL AVIV (JTA) — A
burgeoning grass-roots
peace movement urging the
government to modify its
policies and a counter-
movement supporting Pre-
mier Menahem Begin's
peace plan are emerging in
cities and towns all over Is-
rael. The growing con-
troversy followed a massive
"Peace Now" rally in Tel
Aviv last Saturday night
which Finance Minister
Simha Ehrlich denounced,
saying it "stank of a milit-
ary putsch" because the re-
serve officers who sponsored
the demonstration styled
themselves "officers for
peace."
The reservists demanded
that Ehrlich apoligize for
his "undignified attempt to
deal with criticism of the
government" and the fi-
nance minister has come
under a storm of criticism

Navon Renews Candidacy
for Israel Presidential Post

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Labor Party veteran Yit-
zhak Navon, who last week
withdrew as a candidate to
succeed Israeli President
Ephraim Katzir, this week
appeared likely to be Is-
rael's next president with-
out any opposition. Navon
announced his renewed
candidacy a day after Prof.
Yitzhak Shaveh, Premier
Menahem Begin's personal
choice for the presidency,
withdrew.
Shaveh withdrew be-
cause of strong opposition
from Likud's Liberal Party
wing which supported its
own veteran leader,
Elimelekh Rimalt. But,
after Navon's announce-
ment, Rimalt said that he is
withdrawing because he
learned that members of
Begin's Herut will support
Navon. He said he wanted
to prevent a split in the
Likud and the government
coalition.

Begin's selection of
Shaveh angered his Liberal
Party partners in Likud.
When Rimalt announced
his candidacy, the Liberals
endorsed him. Rimalt was
also supported by elements
of the Labor Party, the
Democratic Movement for
Change, several small lef-
tist factions and some mem-
bers of the religious parties.
Navon told a press con-
ference that he decided
not to put forward his
candidacy last week be-
cause "I felt I lacked the
necessary backing
among Knesset members.
Since then it had become
clear that there is ample
support for my candi-
dacy in the Knesset, ir-
respective of factions,
blocs and community."
Navon, who is a
Jerusalem-born Sephardi,
said he will not represent
any single party or group
but will seek to represent
the entire country.
