Sokolow Holocaust Program
Performed at Orchestra Hall

"Dreams," a work focus-
ing on the Holocaust, will be
performed by members of
Dance Detroit 8:30 p.m.
Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday
at Orchestra Hall. For tic-
ket information, call Or-
chestra Hall, 833-3700.
According to Stephanie
Katz, dance coordinator at
Marygrove who is directing
"Dreams", the work by re-
nowned choreographer
Anna Sokolow is more
choreographed movement
than dance.
The dancers were person-
ally auditioned and selected
by Ms. Sokolow. This is only
the third time that the piece
has been performed, accord-
ing to Ms. Katz. The previ-
ous performances were done
by Sokolow's own dance
company in New York and
by The Netherlands Ballet
in Holland.
to
According
Katz,
Stephanie
"Dreams" is being per-
formed because it "is cer-
tainly timely, with all the
concern being expressed
about the Nazi bookstore
in Detroit. Many school

districts have indicated
their intention to incor-
porate a study of the
Holocaust into their cur-
riculums because stu-
dents today know little
about that period in his-
tory. The dancers see the
performance of this work
their responsibility to
society," Ms. Katz said.
"Dreams" is supported by
the Michigan Council for
the Arts.
Dance Detroit, which has
performed the Nutcracker
Suite Ballet with the De-
troit Symphony Orchestra
for the past three years, will
include other pieces on the
program. Iacob Lascu is ar-
tistic director.
Ms. Sokolow has had
her own dance com-
panies in Mexico, Israel
and New York. Her
works may be found in
the repertories of more
than a score of major
modern dance and ballet
companies around the
world. On Broadway, Ms.
Sokolow has choreog-
raphed the dances in sev-
eral major productions,
including "Street Scene,"
"Candide" and "Camino
Real."
Ms. Sokolow has been in-
volved with both Inbal
and Bat Sheva dance
companies in Israel. This
fall she will travel to Russia
under the auspices of the
U.S. government, to lecture
on American contemporary
dance.
