Bombs Hit Movies, Center Berkowitz Installed by JNF

GENEVA (JTA) — Two
cinemas were heavily dam-
aged by explosions during
the showing of "Operation
Thunderbolt," an Israeli
film depicting the rescue of
hostages at Entebbe Air-
port. There were no casual-
ties at either cinema,-one in
Berne and the other in
Zurich.
As a result of the two
bombings, cinema owners
have decided to stop show-
ing the film and distributors
have announced that they
will no longer publicize it.

Meanwhile, a bomb
exploded in the was-
hroom of the Hebraica
community center in
Buenos Aires injuring
several employes.

It was also reported that
solidarity meetings called
by the Jewish leadership in

two Argentine cities to pro-
test the March 11 terrorist
attack on Israel were can-
celled because of lack of
time to obtain the necessary
permits and because the au-
thorities were unable to
provide adequate police pro-
tection.

of the Jewish people.".
He criticized those Jews,
many of them young, who,
he said, seek to serve hu-
manity in general at the ex-
pense of Jewish interests.
Author, Elie Wiesel, in
installing Berkowitz,
stated: "Events are in the
making which may be
dangerous to Jews and for
which we need leadership;
leaders who will be our mes-
sengers to those who rule
the world; leaders who will
tell you where to go, when to

He pointed to times in
Jewish history, including
the Holocaust period,
when, he said, Jewish
leadership proved to be
inadequate.

Berkowitz, who is the

viously as a JNF honorary
vice president and has been
a member of its board for
several years.

THE NEW JDC PRESIDENT: The JDC is the lifeline
of relief, rescue and rehabilitation to needy Jewish com-
munities in overseas countries.
Donald M. Robinson, the new JDC president, has ac-
-- cepted the immense responsibilities involved in directing
the activities of the 64-year-old organization. He strongly
believes in introducing innovative and creative methods
in public institutions. Excellence is his motto. He is now
determined to attract committed lay leaders from numer-
ous communities into JDC leadership.
A product of the younger generation in American Jewish
leadership, Robinson has been active in Jewish communal
life for quite a number of years. He served, among other
leading positions, as president of the United Jewish Feder-
ation of Greater Pittsburgh.
POLICY INNOVATIONS: A young man with success-
ful experience in the world of business — he comes from the
Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration —
the new JDC president has a modern approach to Jewish
communal activities. He is not satisfied merely with meet-
ing immediate needs and problems. He wants the JDC to
take a look also into the future in these times of turbulence
which seem to engulf Jewish life. And he plans to keep the
JDC prepared for unforeseen situations.
To Robinson, the JDC is not only an organ of on-going
activities of relief, rescue and reconstruction, but also a
social catalyst moving to help Jews in other countries —
especially in Israel — develop a network of community-
based welfare services of their own, making use of JDC
experimentations and experiences. He considers modern
sophisticated forms of aid as important as the older forms of
assistance.
Robinson also believes in evaluating from time to time
the JDC programs. He advocates periodic constructive
analyses ofJDC projects in order to establish which of them
is on the way to achieve its goal and which should be
changed. Basically, he is of the opionion that the JDC
should continue to transfer programs to local community
auspices as quickly as is consistent with responsibile func-•
tioning. This policy of "mission accomplished" by transfer-
ring projects to the care of the local community has been
successfully practiced by JDC for many years.
BASTION OF UNITY: Robinson is no newcomer to the
JDC. He knows every program of the JDC in every land as
very few JDC leaders do. For the last three years, prior to
his becoming president, he served as chairman of the
budget committee of the JDC.
In this position, Robinson has distinguished himself by
showing great ability as well as understanding of all the
JDC operations. He has visited the JDC-supported institu-
tions in central Europe, North Africa, Romania, Iran and
Israel.
The JDC yearly budget is about $40 million, of which
more than $10 million is spent on activities in Israel. This
sum includes $1.5 million for support of yeshivot.
