According to Susan
Sefansky, JFS social
worker, who will help con-
duct the sessions, the small
group discussions will ena-
ble the students "to explore
and discuss among them-
selves and with professional
people, the concerns they
share."
ROME (JTA) — A rabbi
and a Catholic priest led a
religious service Friday at
the Ardeatine Caves out-
side Rome on the 34th an-
niversary of the Nazi World
War II reprisal massacre of
335 people, 70 of them Jews.
At the ceremony, none of
the usual speeches was
read. Instead, relatives of
the victims prayed quietly.
Giovanni Gigliozzi, pres-
ident of the Association for
Families of Martyrs Fallen
for Liberty, said quiet medi-
tation had been preferred to
speeches following the
March 16- kidnapping of
Christian Democratic Party
President Aldo Moro.

Shaveh angered his Lib-
eral Party partners in
Likud. When their vete-
ran leader, Elimelech
Rimalt, announced his
Candidacy last week, the
Liberals endorsed him.
Rimalt also was sup-
ported by elements of the
Labor Party, the Democ-
ratic Movement for
Change, several small lef-
tist factions and some
members of the religious
parties.

drawing because his candi-
dacy was causing needless
rifts within the coalition
and Likud. He also com-
plained that the media had
not always been fair to him
and at times cruel and ten-
dentious. Shaveh was
widely reported to hold ex-
treme right-wing
nationalist views.
Meanwhile, political
pundits said that Shaveh's
withdrawal, far from assur-
ing the election of Rimalt,
might improve the chances
of Labor Party veteran Yit-
zhak Navon. Navon an-
nounced several weeks ago
that he would not be a can-
didate, but he is expected to
reverse that decision. Na-
tional Religious Party
leader Yehuda Ben-Meir
said that his faction would
support Navon.
Israel's president is
elected by the Knesset. The
elections, originally
scheduled to be held on
April 10 were postponed to
April 19 at the request of
Likud and NRP members to
give the government time to
extricate itself from the em-
barassment caused by Be-
gin's endorsement of
Shaveh.

Shaveh Retires From Race
for Israel's Presidential Post
JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Prof. Yitzhak Shaveh, Pre-
mier Menahem Begin's per-
sonal choice to be Israel's
next president, withdrew
from the race Tuesday
under strong pressure from
coalition quarters that op-
posed his candidacy.
Sources close to Begin
said that the premier had
not asked Shaveh to step
down, but he is understood
to have let his pt d ltical in-
timates know that he would
welcome a voluntary with-
drawal.
Shaveh, a nuclear physi-
cist, was virtually unknown
outside of scientific circles
until Begin summoned him
home from work in Paris
last month and persuaded
him to be a candidate to suc-
ceed President Ephraim
Katzir whose four-year
term ends in May.
