Mr. Toth returned to the United States after
three years as the Moscow bureau chief of the
Los Angeles Times. Prior to his leaving he was
questioned for 14 hours by the KGB on charges
of collecting secret political and military infor-
mation. Mr. Toth is presently the Washington
bureau chief of the Low Angeles Times.

Beth Shalom Photo Exhibit
Depicts Lower East Side

"The Lower East Side: A
Portal to American Life," a
new exhibit from New
York's Jewish Museum,
will open 2 p.m. Sunday at
Cong. Beth Shalom.
Adapted from the Jewish
Museum exhibition of 1967,
the exhibit includes about
50 black and white enlarged
photographs which portray
life on New York's Lower
East Side between 1870 and
1924. During that time
millions of immigrants, im-
poverished Jews from East-
ern Europe as well as Ita-
lians, Irish, Poles and
others escaped from the per-
secution and hardship in
their own lands to come to
the U.S.
The photographs by Jacob
Riis, Lewis Hine and others
portray the misery, poverty,
and joy and hope of that era.
"The Lower East Side:
A Portal to American
Life" is part of a series of
six traveling exhibits
created by the Jewish
Museum with assistance
from the National En-
dowment for the Arts and
the National Foundation
for Jewish Culture.
The exhibition also will
be open 9-11 a.m. and 6-10
p.m. April 9. The film, "Lies
My Father Told Me ,":w ill be

shown at 7:30 p.m. April 9
in the synagogue, and there
is a charge.
The exhibition will be
shown 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.
(Senior Citizen Day) and
3-10 p.m. April 10. The film,
"A Brivele Der Marnen,"•
will be shown 8:30 p.m.
April 12 in the synagogue,
and there is a nominal
charge.

cial showings may call the

Violinist Due
at Emanu-El

Yosef Yankelev, first vio-
linist with the New World
Quartet, the official
quartet-in-residence for the
state of Michigan, will ap-
pear in concert 8 p.m. April
16 at Temple Emanu-El.

Yankelev, who emigrated
to Israel from Vilna, USSR,
in 1958, was graduated
from the Rubin Academy in
Jerusalem in 1964. A reci-
pient of the America Israel
Cultural Foundation
Award, he studied at the
Julliard School.

Shaarey Zedek Bond Dinner
Will Honor Mrs. Karbal

Hannah Karbal, a
member of Cong. Shaarey
Zedek and a supporter of
Jewish institutions in the
community and in Israel,
will be honored by her
synagogue at a tribute din-
ner on behalf of State of Is-
rael Bonds.
The event will be held
June 8 in the synagogue's
Morris Adler Hall, where
Mrs. Karbal will be the re-
cipient of the State of Is-
rael's "30th Anniversary
Award."
In addition to their lead-
ership in the Israel Bond
campaign, Mrs. Karbal and
her late husband Morris es-
tablished the Morris Karbal
Scholarship at the Jewish
Theological Seminary, the
Karbal Auditorium for the
Council of Orthodox Rabbis,
and, as one of the founders
of Hebrew University,
Jerusalem, a pharmacy
laboratory. They also won
recognition from Yeshiva
University as Master Buil-
ders in 1968.

supports Bar-Ilan Uni-
versity, Akiva Hebrew

Notables Appear
at Beth Achim

Cong. Beth Achim's adult
education committee will
conduct a program featur-
ing notables from the
Jewish and general com-
munity 8 p.m. Sunday in
Wasserman Hall of the
synagogue.
Participants include Carl
Levin, past president of the
Detroit City Council;
psychiatrist Dr. Emanuel
Tanay; Heidi Brancheau, a
Lebanese Maronite Christ-
ian, who is active in efforts
on behalf of Israel; and au-
thor and media personality
Dave Diles. Hy Shenkman
will be moderator.
The public is invited free
of charge.

Zedek Sisterhood.
Mrs. Karbal was born
Hannah Zalesin, in Liver-
pool, England, and has lived
in Detroit since she was
10 years old. She attended
Northern High School and
Wayne University, then
began her association with
the National Wholesale
Drug Co.
