THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, March 31, 1978 19 JDL, Pro-Palestinian Groups May Clash on Redgrave Issue -NEW YORK (JTA) — A different kind of excitement may be injected into the Oscar ceremonies in Los Angeles next Monday if the Jewish Defense League and pro-Palestinian groups have their way. • The JDL has announced that it will stage a demonst- ration at the internation- ally televised motion pic- ture Academy Awards ceremony to protest the nomination of British ac- tress Vanessa Redgrave for an Oscar as best supporting actress in "Julia." At the same time, Arabs and pro- Palestinian sympathizers announced plans to stage a counter - demonstration against the JDL. Anger against Ms. Red- grave has been expressed by the JDL and other Jewish groups for having made a documentary film, "The Palestinians," which pre- sents what some have termed a one-sided pro- Palestinian anti-Israeli - view. Protests against the film have been mounted in cities where it has been shown in this country and some have called for a boycott against that film and any film in which the actress appears. At the same time, many in the film industry and outside, Jews as well as non-Jews, have voiced opposition to these de- monstrations and calls for boycott. Among the reasons for opposing, these actions, and speci- fically the one planned Literary Prizes MEXICO CITY (JTA) — Six poets and writers have been named winners of the Fernando Jeno Award for Literature for 1977, it was announced by the Culture Committee of the Central Jewish Committee of Mexico. The winners are Mor- dechai Tsanin, Hirsh Osherovitch, Malka Cohen and Yishai Tzion, all from Israel; and Boleslao Levin and Chaim Barylko, both from Buenos Aires. The awards, each in the amount of $500, will be presented at a special ceremony April 11. The Fernando Jeno Award was established in 1976 in the name of the late president of the Central Jewish Committee - by his widow and children. Leviant Wins Wallant Prize NEW YORK — Author Curt Leviant has been named winner of the 1977 Edward Lewis Wallant Award. The award is given annually fora creative work of fiction, novel or short stories, that has signifi- cance for the American Jew. Leviant also won an 0. Henry Award for his short story "Ladies and Gentle- men, the Original Music of the Hebrew Alphabet."
