(JTA) — The lack of "religi- ous freedom in Israel" with its refusal to recognize the Conservative and Reform movements was assailed by Rabbi Stanley S. Rabinowitz in his presiden- tial address to the 600 dele- gates attending the 78th annual convention of the Rabbinical Assembly. In a strong attack on the concept that "Orthodoxy is synonymous with religion and with Halakha," Rabinowitz called on the 1,000-member Conserva- tive rabbinical association to adopt a resolution chal- lenging the idea that Judaism in Israel "is to be supervised and adminis- Straight Talk with Novick Delcares ZOA Candidacy PITTSBURGH Ivan J. The "presumptuous as- sumption that Orthodoxy is the only ligitimate form of Judaism," Rabinowitz further stated "is the sin of Orthodoxy," and it must be challenged. Though he said he finds expressions of criticism of Israel against his grain, Rabinowitz declared: "It is because we are uncondi- tionally committed to the security and well being of the state of Israel that we have a duty to address the insecurities of non- Orthodox Judaism in Israel. Orthodox people should be just as disturbed as we are about religious coercion in Israel, or lack of religious freedom in Israel. Indeed, some few are, but painfully few." The Orthodox, he added, "are quite consistent in re- jecting us, and so are we in reaching our hand out to them. In refusing to make adjustments to the contem- porary challenge, they run the risk of becoming the new Karaites. We shall con- tinue in our way, and they shall continue in theirs, and let Eliyahu resolve." In an unprecedented ac- tion, the Rabbinical Assem- bly at its opening banquet adopted a resolution criticizing the Carter Ad- ministration for "unfairly painting Israel as being in- transigent and unwilling to accept the risks for peace." The resolution "urged the Administration to focus its energies on bringing other Arab states to the peace table and pressing them to take a reasonable attitude of compromise. We sin- cerely hope the U.S. will seek for Israel the open and fair negotiating process that it would demand for it- self." Schindler Hits Jewish Militants NEW YORK (JTA) — The Conference of Presi- dents of Major American Jewish Organizations de- nounced a plan by a "milit- ant" Jewish group to harass Egyptian diplomats in New York. The group, calling itself the Jewish Committee for Concern, said it planned to harass the Egyptians in order to disrupt American-Egyptian rela- tions. Rabbi Alexander M. Schindler, chairman of the Presidents Conference, said that the group's plan to harass the Egyptians "will serve no useful purpose. It certainly will not advance the cause of peace. All re- sponsible members of the American Jewish commun- ity will surely join me in condemning such ac- tivities."
