JERUSALEM — Former
Detroiter Joel Thome re-
cently conducted the
Jerusalem Symphony Or-
chestra at a concert of A. U.
Boskovich's "Ornaments,"
Bach's "Concerto for Violin
in E Major" and Beeth-
oven's "Fourth Symphony."
Thome, who grew up in
Detroit and P6ntiac, was
invited to join the Israel
Philharmonic Orchestra in
1961 as a principle percus-
sionist. He met A. U. Bos-
kovich following a rehear-
sal of the composer's work,
"Daughter of Israel." A
close professional relation-
ship developed and Bos-
kovich became Thome's
composition teacher.
Thome remained in Israel
until 1964, creating the first
Israel Percussion Ensemble
and acting as a musical ad-
viser to Inbal. A deep
friendship between Thome
and Boskovich developed
and lasted until the latter's
death in 1964.

"Ornaments," Bos-
kovich's last completed
work, was given its first
and only performance in
1965. "Ornaments" is a
contemporary interpre-
tation of the Yemenite
prayer mode of the "Sung
of Sea" from Exodus XV.

Hospital Stay
Over for Golda

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Former Premier Golda Meir
was scheduled to be dis-
charged from the hospital
this week, her doctors said.
Mrs. Meir was taken to
Beilinson Hospital in Petah
Tikva last week after comp-
laining of chest pains. Crin-
trary to media reports, she
did not suffer a heart attack,
the doctors said. They said
she was resting comfortably
and was able to leave her
bed to receive family and
friends.
The former prime minis-
ter received a message of
concern from President
Carter during her hospital
stay. The message read:
"I was alarmed to learn of
your illness and relieved to
hear that you are resting
comfortably. Your strength,
courage and humanity have
been an inspiration to our
people and we look upon you
with deep affection and ad-
miration."

Air Base Deal?

WASHINGTON (ZINS)
— One of the three Sinai air

bases Israel wants to retain
after any peace agreement
with Egypt is Etzion, a joint
Israel-U.S. venture costing
$5 billion and paid for by the
U.S.
Its installations were de-
signed for American use,
and the U.S. has flown
strategic missions from Etz-
ion over the Red Sea and the
Arabian Peninsula.
Israeli sources speculate
that the U.S. and Egypt will
keep the same arra,ngement
at Etzion if the base goes to
Egypt as part of a Middle
East peace agreement.
