THE DETROIT JEWISH Ins
Federal Judge Acts to Delay Nazi March
CHICAGO (JTA) —
American Nazis will not be
legally able to hold their
scheduled march in Skokie,
the predominantly Jewish
suburb of Chicago, on April
20 because of a decision by a
federal judge March 17.
Federal Judge Bernard
Decker agreed to a request
by Skokie village officials to
delay his order last month
striking down three village
ordinances aimed at block-
ing the Nazi march until an
appeal of his decision by
Jewish groups can be heard.
Since the appeal is not
scheduled to be heard until
early May, this effectively
means the Nazi march can-
not be held on April 20, Hi-
tler's birthday.
Decker acted after
Skokie officials argued
that the Nazi march and
counter-demonstrations
by Jewish groups "pose a
threat to the well-being of
the village." The judge
said he hoped the delay
would provide a "cooling
off period" for all sides.
Prior to the action taken
by Decker, the Catholic War
Veterans joined the Jewish
War Veterans in condemn-
ing the proposed march by
the Nazis. The Catholic or-
ganization-, in a resolution,
termed the march "odious,
offensive and obscene to the
American mind, manner
and way of life."
Meanwhile it was re-
ported from Clayton, Mo.,
that Frank Collin, director
of the National Socialist
Party, of America, and
leader of the planned march
through Skokie, has been
indicted on a charge of strik-
ing Police Chief Robert
Treuken of Florissant, Mo.,
at a Nazi demonstration
outside the Florissant City
Hall last Oct. 8.
The indictment said that
Collin, 33, and Harris J.
Hunter, 22, both of Chicago,
struck the police chief dur-
ing a skirmish in front of
City Hall after city officials
had denied the Nazis a per-
mit to hold a rally on city
property. Both men deny
the charge.
Jewish
Chicago's
community, meanwhile,
will conduct a two-part
response to the threat of a
proposed Nazi march in
Skokie, it was announced
by Sol Goldstein, Skokie
resident, Holocaust sur-
vivor and leader of a
Jewish United Fund
(JUF) committee framing
the response.
Speaking at a press con-
ference held at the Jewish
Federation building, Golds-
tein said the plans included
a weeklong educational
program to be conducted the
week of April 16 whether or
not the Nazis carry out an-
nounced plans to march on
April 20.
The second part of the re-
sponse would be a massive,
but peaceful, demonstration
with an estimated 50,000
participants to be held at
the same time the Nazis ap-
pear, if and when they do,
Goldstein said.
These plans were en-
dorsed at the conference by
David Smerling, president
of the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Chicago.
In Jerusalem, the
Knesset called for a
speedup in the trial of
Nazi war criminals who
murdered Jews in the
"Maidanek concentration
camp. Discussing two
motions to the agenda,
the Knesset also ap-
pealed for more trials by
West Germany of Nazi
war criminals, and ex-
pressed horror at the
signs of growing forget-
fulness concerning the
Holocaust.
The motions were pre-
sented by Mapam Knesse-
ter Chaika Grossman and
Democratic Movement for
Change Knesseter Assaf
Yaguri. Grossman, a sur-
vivor of the Holocaust, cal-
led for the establishment of
a "World Council Against
Anti-Semitism and Neo-
Nazism" whose primary ob-
jective would be to monitor
all manifestations of racism
and anti-Jewish activity.

Singer Autobiography Delightful
By WARREN FREEDMAN
"A Young Man in Search
of Love" (Doubleday) is a de-
lightful 177-page autobiog-
raphy unlike any of the
dozen or more books which
Isaac Bashevis Singer has
written over the years be-
cause the author does not
create a memorable charac-
ter: he simply delineates
himself!
In somewhat droll style,
he lets the reader in on his
own personal struggle to be-
come a writer in Warsaw,
Poland, amid his very per-
sonal quest for love.
Unfortunately, Singer
does not develop a character
or personality for Gina, an
older woman with whom he
has had a long and continu-
ous affair, at most he con-
fides that Gina was the re-
cipient of his "mighty love,"
but. the author's sense of
shame does not satisfy the
reader because Isaac Singer
is not at his best here as a
"narrator of human pas-
sion?'
&smother woman, Stefa
and her pregnancy and
her eagerness for a sham
marriage is not de-
lineated in credible style
revealing her proud de-
fiance. Singer's other
woman, Sabina, yearning
for worldliness, is
painted in simple terms,
and her character
emerges with little con-
viction.
Singer's bedtime adven-
tures with Marila, the maid,
similarly do not ring true.
Still this small book is a
attributes of the same sub-
stance."
The reader is reminded
that the current book is but
a continuation of his previ-
ous book, "A Little Boy in
Search of God." Scattered
among Singer's platitudes
are criticisms of other writ-
ers — he labels Sholem
