ABE CHEROW, President
CALL LU 4-5900
with Lebanese political and
military leaders in Beirut.
According to some re-
ports, the Lebanese prom-
ised to send two battalions
of their newly rehabilitated
army into the south. Weiz-
man expressed hope that
the cease-fire he ordered
Tuesday will be observed by
the terrorists and said Is-
rael would cooperate with
the UN force.
While the front lines
were relatively quiet, ter-
rorist artillery continued
to shell Israeli towns in
Upper Galilee on Wed-
nesday but no casualties
were reported. A
spokesman for PLO chief
Yasir Arafat was re-
ported saying "there is no
cease fire in our dictio-
nary."
UNIFIL will include one
or two French paratroop
battalions, a Norwegian
battalion and a Nepalese
unit. The British army will
provide a logistics unit. One
of the first tasks of the force
will be to take over control
of the Litani River bridges
from Israeli forces. The wes-
ternmost span, the Kas-
miyeh Bridge, is in terrorist
hands and it is not known if
they will hand it over peace-
fully to the UN troops. The
bridge was left open by Is-
rael to facilitate

Some difficulties have
cropped up on the Israeli
side of the border where
settlers are organizing to
protest what they consider
the untimely withdrawal of
Israeli forces from south
Lebanon. The chairman of
the Metulla town council
said, "We may lie before the
tanks if we are not 100 per-
cent sure that the terrorists
will not return to south
Lebanon and resume their
hostile activity against is
rael."
The Security Council re-
solution called upon Israel
to cease its military action
in south Lebanon and to
immediately withdraw its
forces. Twelve of the 15
Council members voted in
favor of the resolution. The
Soviet Union and Czechos-
lovakia abstained and
China declined to partici-
pate.
According to the resol-
ution, the UN force would
be deployed in south
Lebanon "for the pur-
pose of confirming the
withdrawal of Israeli
forces, restoring interna-
tional peace and security
and assisting the gov-
ernment of Lebanon in
ensuring the return of its
effective authority in the
area." The resolution did
not give a time limit for
Israeli withdrawal or for
the interim UN force.
According to Israeli
sources, Israel will demand
that no terrorists be allowed
to infiltrate south of the Li-
tani. Israel wants a force to
be in control of the three Li-
tani bridges to bar the use of
the bridges for the transpor-
tation of arms and men.
Israel also demands that
a mixed gendarmerie, com-
prised of local residents and
soldiers of the Lebanese
army patrol key villages in
the south such as Maroun
a-Ras, Ras Bayada, Bint
Jibeil and Taibeh, all pre-
sently occupied by Israeli
forces.
In addition, Israel insists
that the port of Tyre revert
to purely civilian status,
that the two major terrorist
bases, Hasbaya in northern
"Fatahland" and Nabatiyeh
north of the Litani, come

Pope Paul Hits
Israel's Forces
ROME — Pope Paul VI
has accused Israel of indis-
criminate bombing of de-
fenseless refugee camps in
Lebanon, the Vatican said
last Friday.
The Pope is profoundly
saddened by the huge
number of victims caused by
Israel's indiscriminate
bombardments on defense-
less refugee camps and
Lebanese cities," said a
telegram sent by Cardinal
Jean Villot, the Pope's sec-
retary of state.
Pope Paul said Monday
that he hoped the Palesti-
nian terrorist attack in Is-
rael would not lead to a new
"chain of bloody violence."
under control of a neutral
force, and that Christians in
south Lebanon who have
been Israel's allies during
the past two years, should
not suffer as a result of the
new arrangement.
In the Lebanese action,
Israeli forces lost 18 killed
in battle and three more in a
road accident. Some 250
terrorists were confirmed
dead, but it was estimated
that a total of 400 were kil-
led.
