(Editor's note: Rabbi
Siegel is professor of
ethics and theology at the
Jewish Theological
Seminary and chairman
of the Rabbinical Assem-
bly's Committee on
Jewish Law and Stan-
dards.)
May a Jew donate his or-
gans to be used for trans-
plants after his death? May
an intermarried couple be
congratulated in the
synagogue bulletin? Does
wine need rabbinical super-
vision?
These are the sort of ques-
tions that come before the
Committee on Jewish Law
and Standards of the Rab-
binical Assembly. This
committee is responsible for
deciding matters of Jewish
law for the Conservative
movement, numbering
more than 1,000 rabbis and
congregations.
In deciding matters of
Jewish law, the committee
attempts to steer a middle
course between a rigid
adherence to precedent and
a denial of the authority of
Halakha. In interpreting
Jewish legal literature, the
committee represents the
Conservative philosophy
which.. combines tradition_
with change. It seeks out
the precedents; but
evaluates them in the light
of the assumptions and
knowledge upon which they
are based. Then it applies

Jewls law opposes the
desecration of a dead
body and the deriving of
any benefit from the
corpse, organ donations
fall into the category of
pikuakh nefesh, the sav-
ing of life which super-

cedes all other considera-
tions.

The committee also has to
deal with problems such as
congratulating an inter-
married couple in the bulle-
tin of a synagogue. It would
represent tacit approval of a
practice that threatens the
future of Jewish life.
The law committee also
makes its decisions based on
the advice of experts in sci-
ence and technology. It has
consulted chemists concern-
ing the porousness of vari-
ous new utensils such as
Melmac, and new food pro-
ducts such as dough-
softeners.
One of the most interest-
ing was the investigation of
the production of wine. It
was learned, after a two-
year study, that wines pro-
duced in industrialized
countries is processed in
such a way that there is no
human contact with the
wine from the time the
grapes are put into the
machine until fully bottled
wine emerges. This would
mean that, except for Pas-

The President "expressed
the view that despite the re-
cent increase in violence in
the area there remains a
deep conviction that re-
newed progress toward
peace is essential and that
the door to progress remains
open." The statement said
that Carter urged all those
involved "to make the his-
toric decision on which
peace now depends."
President, Carter placed
responsibility for peace in
the Middle East and in the
world on Begin in welcom-
ing him to Washington.
Begin, in turn, re-
minded the President of

slaughter of Israelis on
March 11 and "the im-
placable character of the
enemy" Israel faces and
expressed hope that "the
spirit of Jerusalem,
Washington and Is-
mailia" that flowed from
Egyptian President
Anwar Sadat's visit to Is-
rael "will be renewed."
Speaking of the "times of
trial," Begin emphasized,
"We shall overcome." He as-
serted Israel's wish for
peace "which we yearn for
Israel and the Arab coun-
tries."

sover, all wines can be used.
The committee did recom-
mend, however, that for
ritual occasions such as
kidush and Havdala,
Israel-produced wine
should be used.
One of the most con-
troversial issues with
which the committee has
wrestled in recent years
has been the status of
women in the synagogue
ritual. It has recom:
mended to individual
congregations that
women be called to the
Torah and be counted in
the minyan. This recom-
mendation is not binding
on the individual
synagogues where the
local rabbi makes the de-
cision.
