Friday, Ilarck 17, 1978 21 THE DETROIT. JEWISH NEWS Christians Send Jewish Bible to Jailed Anatoly Shcharansky SEATTLE (JTA) — The Church Council of Greater Seattle, a body representing all the Christian denomina- tions in the area, recently sent a copy of the Jewish Holy Scriptures to Anatoly Shcharansky, the Soviet Jewish dissident. "By sending him the Scriptures, the local Christ- ian community is attempt- ing to make Soviet officials aware that American Christians, as well as American Jews, are con- cerned about the lack of re- ligious freedom in the Soviet Union:, said David . Stahl, Pacific Northwest regional director of the Anti-Defamation League of Bnai Brith. "The Soviet authorities may not let him receive the Scriptures," Stahl added, "but they will recognize the concern of American Christ- ians for the plight of Soviet Jews. Hopefully this move will be followed by similar actions on the part of Chris- tian communities through- out America." SAVE! SAVE! ti BUY DIRECT FROM THE IMPORTER SEY-M4D1LEIR. KAPLAN and Cc). ANDREI SAKHAROV Meanwhile, in Michi- gan, Mayors Donald F. Fracassi of Southfield, David H. Shepherd of Oak Park and Governor William Milliken proc- laimed March 15 as Anatoly Shcharansky Day, commemorating the first anniversary of the Soviet Jewish activist's arrest and incarceration. In Moscow, Andrei D. Sakharov, the physicist and civil rights advocate, said that the Soviet authorities had cut off his telephone service for the first time. The action against Dr. Sakharov came one day after he had led a demonst- ration near the Kremlin ac- cusing the Soviet leadership of supporting the Palesti- nian terrorists who killed 32 persons in a raid in Israel last weekend. Dr. Sakharov said that a woman had telephoned his apartment and told his wife that the telephone was being disconnected because they had not paid for long- distance calls. Mrs. Sakharov said she had re- ceipts for all long distance calls, but the woman, who refused to identify herself, hung up. Sakharov said he and his wife went to the inter- national telephone ex- change where an official checked their receipts and told them she knew of no reason for their telephone to be cut off. Phone service was re- stored after three days. In a related development, it was reported that more matza will be baked in Mos- cow this year than last year, according to Solomon Kleinman, chairman of Moscow's Jewish commun- ity. In the U.S., Rabbi Moshe Sherer, executive president of Agudath Israel of America, met with Sec- retary of State Cyrus Vance on the shipment of matza. In Jerusalem, the pres- idium of the Brussels Con- ference on Soviet Jewry, meeting in Israel, decided to launch a world-wide cam- paign against anti-Semitic propaganda. Leon Dulzin, chairman of the World Zionist Organiza- tion, speaking at the closing session, claimed that Mos- cow has become an interna- tional center for the dis- semination of anti-Semitic materials in various lan- guages to many parts of the world, specifically the Arab countries. He said Soviet television has joined the process of late, concentrat- ing its attack on aliya ac- tivists in the USSR. Dr. Raphael Nudel- man, a Soviet immigrant, told the presidium that a series of anti-Semitic ar- ticles appeared recently in Ogoniok, a popular magazine in the USSR. One article alleged that the Eichmann trial was staged to conceal collab- oration with the Nazis by such Jewish leaders as Chaim Weizmann, David Ben-Gurion, Moshe Sharett and Levi Eshko/. A pamphlet written by Soviet Jews describing their plight will be published in several languages shortly, the presidium was told. The New York Associa- tion for New Ameri- cans this week treated newly arrived Soviet Jewish immigrants to the U.S. to a Purim workshop where they were taught about the observance of Purim and were served traditional refreshments. At the same time, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Soc- iety (BIAS) lauded U.S. At- torney General Griffin Bell for approving parole last December for 5,000 Russian refugees in Italy. Acting President Named by LZA NEW YORK — Israel K. Goldstein, administrative vice president of the Labor Zionist -Alliance, has as- sumed the duties of presi- dent of the LZA. Dr. Judah J. Goldstein will serve as acting president until the national convention of the LZA in early 1979. Goldstein was elected to the Actions Committee of the World Zionist Organiza- tion at the 29th World Zionist Congress in Jerusalem.
