terrorist assult and 76
were injured, including
nine policemen, some of
them critically. A later
report put the number of
injured at 82 and indi-

In Washington, under the
sponsorship of the Democ-
ratic and Republican lead-/
ers in the House of Rep-
resentatives, more than
half the members of the
House signed a concurrent
resolution Tuesday con-
demning the PLO for its at-
tack on unarmed civilians
in Israel Saturday and de-
plored the statements of ap-
proval for the terrorist as-

In less than a full day
the resolution attracted
the signatures of 243 of
the 435 members of the
House. Rep. Jim Wright
(13-Texas), the majority
leader, and Rep. John
Rhodes (R-Ariz.), the
minority leader, were
co-sponsors of the mea-

The resolution was in-
itiated by Rep. Sidney Yates
(D-Ill. ), dean of Jewish Con-

the hijacked bus. The ter-
rorists had almost 70 hos-
tages. They continued
southward, firing at pas-
sing cars, killing or
wounding their occup-
ants.
Small patrols attempted
to intercept the terrorists'
but were driven off by
hand grenades, automatic
fire and mortar shells. The
bus raced through Natanya.
A large roadblock was
erected at Herzliya. Police
and border police took posi-
tions on both sides of the
road. As the hijacked bus
approached, they fired at its
tires. The bus was halted,
machinegun and rocket fire
blasting from its windows.
The terrorists had al-
ready wired explosives
throughout the -vehicle and
tied their hostages to their
seats. At the roadblock,
they left the bus. They lob-
bed a mortar shell into it
and the bus exploded bring-
ing fiery death to those in-
side.
Six terrorists were felled
by police fire and two were
captured. Three, believed to
have escaped, were iden-
tified among the dead on the
bus.

The only survivors
among the passengers
were those who managed
to leave the bus before it
was blown up.
Israeli Defense Minister
Ezer Weizman indicated
that Israel will stiffen its
security requirements in
the aftermath of the ter-
rorist massacre, but does
not believe that should alter
the outcome of the presently
stalled peace talks with
Egypt or preclude negotia-
tions with Jordan over the
West Bank if Jordan is wil-
ling to negotiate.
In Washington, President
Carter, in a message to
Premier Begin stated that

the "cowradly and senseless
attack" on innocent civi-
lians in Israel was "a brutal

SEND MISHLOACH MONOS

GAIL RUBIN

The following events
were pieced together from
eye-witness accounts and
police reports.
At about 3:45 p.m two
Zodiac-type rubber dhingies
reached the surf at Maagen
Michael. Aboard were 11
heavily armed terrorists —
two of them women — on a
mission of death and de-
struction. They landed
stealthily, unnoticed.
They saw the young
photographer in her small
rented car. Reportedly they
asked her for directions,
then shot her to death. But
the car could not hold the
killers and their Russian-
made arms and ammuni-
tion. They walked to the
main coastal highway bet-
ween Haifa and Tel Aviv
and opened fire on passing
vehicles.
The photographer was
identified as American-
born Gail Rubin, a distant
relative of Sen. Abraham
Ribicoff (D-Conn.).

The terrorists managed to
commandeer a large Mer-
cedes_taxi. But it, too, could
not contain them and their
deadly equipment.

The -premier de-
nounced the PLO and the
Soviet Union which, he
said, supports and arms
them, in equal terms, li-
kening both to the Nazis
in their determination to
destroy Jews.
Begin disclosed that
documents found on the ter-
rorists showed that they in-
tended to capture hostages
and "make demands of the
government of Israel." (Is-
rael Radio reported that a
list of imprisoned terrorists
whose release was to be de-
manded had been found on
the terrorists.)
Meanwhile, Israel has
appealed to a number of
countries with which it
has diplomatic ties to re-
scind their recognition of
the PLO as representa-
tive of the Palestinians.
Israeli missions abroad
had been instructed by
the government to cite
the terrorist assault for
which El Fatah has taken
credit as proof of the bas-
ically terrorist nature of
the PLO.

From the taxi they fired
at a northbound bus,, hit-
ting some of the passen-
gers. The bus halted and
its driver was ordered, at
gunpoint, to turn around
and head south toward
Tel Aviv. A tour bus was
also halted and , its pas-
sengers ordered to board

least one friend on Thursday (March

A PURIM MESSAGE

from
RABBI ADAM M. SDINEERSOR
binitelier RAM

On the festival of Purim. when we all
listen carefully the mating of the
Megilah and ponder upon the story it
tells us, let us all remember a few im-
portant details and facts that took
place in those days at this time.: •
There arose then a Martian, wno is-
sued a decree to murder and destroy all
Jews at a fixed date.
Oueen Esther then calls upon Mor-
decai to -gather all the Jews and fast-
and then she would to and plead with
the king to rescind the terrible decree.
Mordecai thereupon goes and
gathers tans of thousands of Jewish
children and teaches them the Torah

fering the Omer when the Beth-

All the children are so enchanted by
the new spirit that Mordecai had incul-
cated into them that even fatting the
danger of death. they exclaim We stick
with Mordecai and the Torah — for life

In that very sane day the decree be-
comes null and void. Hainan's downfall
is already assured and the Jews are
saved, even though they learn of it only
after a number of months.

These Two Mitzvos (precepts) are
most important (and easiest) for they
express the essential theme of Purim
— the unity and togetherness of the
Jewish people. These are the minimum
requirements for the observance of the
Purim Mitzvos. However, if one gives
mow charity to the poor, or none Mis-
Nosch Monos to friends. the better.

LISTEN to the MEGILLAH

(Book of Esther) — twice: one on Wed-
nesday right (March 22nd) and again on
Thursday morning (March 23rd). For
the exact time of the reading of the
Megillah, consult your Rabbi or
Synagogue.
