Quebec Magazine Calls Zionism
`Cancer, Israel Ruined Oranges'

mittee, the umbrella or-

Jewish Congress, the Cana-

strongly worded complaint
with the Quebec press coun-

Delorme, broadcaster and
unsuccessful Progressive-
Conservative candidate
who has been accused in the
past of anti-Semitic views.
Delorme has been quoted as
saying that the Diary of
Anne Frank is a forgery and
that no more than a million
Jews were killed by the
Nazis.
Marcel Chaput, direc-
tor general of the
magazine, said he was
not surprised at the reac-
tion of the Jewish com-
munity to the articles.
Chaput said: "With Jews,
you have to agree with
them or they call you ra-
cist. Jews don't want in-
dependence for Quebec
so why should I support
independence for Israel?
What have Jews done for
the French-Canadians in
Quebec? Nothing. They
have done nothing for
French Canada."
Asked about the article
on the Jaffa oranges,
Chaput said: "It is not
necessarily an affirmation,
butJsrael can be expected to
have done it. The Royal
Mounted Police in Canada
have set fires and planted
bombs. Why shouldn't Jews
poison their oranges?" he
asked.
Premier Rene Levesque's
assistant press secretary,
Nicole L'Heureux, stated
that the Quebec provincial
government "has absolutely
no political or financial
links" with the magazine.

Pan Am Appointments Told

A.B. (Sky) Magary has
been designated vice presi-
dent - passenger marketing
at Pan American World
Airways, William T. Sea-
well, chairman and chief
executive office, announced.
Henry P. Hill, formerly
vice president - airline .
planning and scheduling,
has been designated divi-
sional vice president - Un-
ited States, succeeding
Magary.
David A. Hall was elected
vice president - airline
planning and scheduling,
succeeding Hill.
In his new post, Mag-
ary will be responsible
for Pan Am's worldwide
marketing effort, includ-
ing advertising, sales and
pricing policies.
Magary, 35, has held sev-
eral senior management
posts at Pan Am since join-
ing the airline in 1967 as a
financial analyst. He was
named staff vice president -
Atlantic marketing in 1972
and subsequently was re-
sponsible for a variety of
marketing activities.

In 1975 he was appointed
regional managing director
- Southwest Pacific, based
in Sydney, Australia, and in
January 1977 was named
divisional vice president -
United States, responsible
for Pan Am's field market-
ing and station operations
in all of the U.S. outside of
the Northeast region. He
also is director of the Pacific
Area Travel Association.

ning, was elevated to vice
president - airline plan-
ning and scheduling in

A Forest for the Soldiers

JERUSALEM — A few
kilometers from Jerusalem
near Sha'ar Hagai, where
the "Burma Road" was con-
structed to link the besieged
capital with the coast dur-
ing the War of Indepen-
dence, the Association of
Americans and Canadians
in Israel is planting a
memorial forest to com-
memorate 100 Americans
and Canadians, or sons of
olim from those countries,
who laid down their lives in
Israel's wars and border ac-
tions so that the Jewish
people might live.
A forest of 100,000 trees is
planned — 1,000 for each of
the fallen.
In a Jerusalem Post arti-
cle, Eliezer Whartman
asked: What did those mem
feel as they went forth to
continue the-battle against
a new tyranny which sought
to destroy the Third Jewish
Commonwealth?
As David Ben-Gurion
wrote in a preface to a
collection of letters writ-
ten by those whb fell on
the battlefields, "Only
through the words of the
men themselves ... feel-
ings expressed only to
themselves and their
close friends — feelings
which, in the main, were
never intended for the

public eye — only
through these shining
words can we catch a
glimpse of the glorious
spirit by virtue of which
we stood fast and
triumphed."
One of the Americans
who came to Palestine to
help the state of Israel come
into being was Baruch
Linsky of Chicago. He was
killed shortly after joining
the Hagana, before the state
was born.
In a letter to a friend, he
explained why he had come
to this country:
"Marx," he wrote, "was
lost to me, and Freud rattled
me completely; but behind
them I found Moses, who
never knew death. I became
aware that the knowledge
which I had acquired from
Marx and Freud only served
to point out where lay the
real source of salvation, and
so I came to Jerusalem to
redeem my soul . . ."
