THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS JERUSALEM — An Is- raeli journalist didn't let the danger of his position - rob him of his wits when the plane he was on had to make an emergency landing at the Entebbe airport. Zvi Lidar, a reporter for Israeli radio, was on a scheduled Kenya Airways flight from Lusaka to Nairobi when the plane accidentally strayed into Ugandan airspace. It was ordered to land, and at that point Zvi knew he was in grave- danger. He first tried to hide in the washroom, but was disco- vered when the plane was searched. "I was really scared," he said. "I knew the Ugandans were constantly on the lookout to arrest Is- raelis." As soon as a few passen- gers whose passports were examined were allowed to move back to plane, he nonchalantly joined them, undete6ted by the au- thorities. "The noise of the plane's engines starting up was the sweetest music I've ever heard in my life," he confessed. Jewish Tittles NEW YORK — For nearly 70 of the 112 years that a world chess title has existed, it has been held by four Jewish players, aFid at present the possibility is not that remote that Victor Lvovich Korchnoi might win the title this year. The Russian Jew who de- fected to Holland is leading in the elimination contest in Belgrade against a half- Jew, Boris Spassky, for the chance to challenge the pre- sent title holder Anatoly S. Karpov. The first Jewish titlehol- der was Wilhelm Steinitz, the first world titleholder, who won in 1866 and re- mained first until 1894. , He was followed by Dr. Emanuel Lasker from 1894 to 1921 and then by Mikahail Moiseyevitch Botwinnik from 1948 to 1963 with a few 'short breaks, and finally Mikhail Tal, another Soviet Jew, for one year. . Days Numbered Based on Sabbath By RABBI SAMUEL FOX (Copyright 1978, JTA, Inc.) The days of the week are only given numbers and not names in the Hebrew lan- guage. The days of the week all refer numerically to the Sabbath. This is a means of reminding the Jew of the approach of the Sabbath. It also tells him that each day has a larger value than the 24-hour period which encompasses it. It plays a role in remind- ing the Jew of the role of the Almighty as the Creator of the universe who worked for six days and rested on the Sabbath. It tells the Jew to be crea- tive and to look forward to the holy Sabbath in which to take stock of his crea- tions. Enjoy a"Suntan" Dream Vacation" in Miami or Ft.Lauderdale for 8 days, 7 nights.
