Black Leaders Tell Solidarity

NEW YORK — "Israel
and the Jewish people are a
barometer of man's human-
ity to man. Israel is the soul
of democracy in the Middle
East. We Americans cannot
stand idly by and watch her
defenseless and call ourse-
lves civilized people," said
Dr. Bernard Gifford of the
Russell Sage Foundation,
who with Bayard Rustin
and 14 other prominent
black leaders took part in a
recent tour of Israel.
The group, all members of
BASIC (Black Americans to
Support Israel Committee),
toured Israel to study its
approach to social and
economic integration. They
met with prominent Israeli
leaders including President
Ephraim Katzir, former
Minister of Defense Sh i mon
Peres, Minister of Interior
Joseph Burg, Jerusalem's
Mayor Teddy Kollek and
Eliezer Shmueli, director-
general of the Ministry of
Education.
The delegation visited
holy sites in Jerusalem,
Bethlehem, Nazareth and
the Galilee. They also ob-
served activities at the
"Good FenCe," where
Lebanese Christians cross
over into Israel for medical
aid and supplies.
James Parks, editor of the
Pittsburgh Courier,
Pittsburgh's leading black
newspaper, summed up his
experiences on the tour:

Sam Belkin, 72

Sam Belkin, retired
owner of Belkin Brothers
Markets on East Warren in
Detroit, died March 7 at age
72.
Born in Russia, Mr. Bel-
kin lived 58 years in De-
troit. He retired in 1970. He
was a pioneer in the estab-
lishment of independent
supermarkets. His last
store was located on Seven
Mile Road in Detroit.
Mr. Belkin was a
member of Young. Israel
of Northwest Detroit and
Young Israel of Green-
field, the Hebrew, Be-
nevolent Society, the
American Jewish Con-
gress and Mizrachi. He
also was active on behalf
of the Shaare Zedek Hos-
pital in Jerusalem. He re-
sided at 15061 Northfield,
Oak Park.
Mr. Belkin is survived by
his wife, Lillian; two sons,
Dr. Maurice and Edward; a
daughter, Mrs. Jack (Edith)
Wolf; a sister, Mrs. Irvin
(Shaindel) Lawton of Sher-
man Oaks, Calif.; and five

M. Hershenson,
Former Detroiter

"I think it's very easy to
describe Israel; it is a nation
built out of oppression,
under continuous pressure
from outside enemies.

"The spirit its people
showed in building this
nation, their efforts to es-
tablish a homeland
where they can be free
and .worship in freedom
really draws sympathy in
the black community be-
cause we are facing that
same problem today. In
our struggle- for libera-
tion from the effects of
slavery, we can identify
with Israel."

Rustin, who led the dele-
gation and is the founder of
BASIC, explained the ori-
gin of the organization and
the nature of his commit-
ment to Israel:

"BASIC was formed in
order to show that black
people in the United States,
many of us, have deep affec-
tion for Israel. Why? Be-
cause we believe as black
people who have suffered,
not so much as the Jewish
people, but who have suf-
fered grievously, that we
ought to assist others who
have been persecuted. Be-
cause Israel is the only
democracy in the Middle
East, and we have lived long
enough to know that true
freedom is only possible
where democracy exists.
Because we have had the
experience of the Jewish
people of America standing
with us since the time of
Thomas Jefferson in our
struggle to rid ourselves of
slavery and to find freedom.
And so we selected the

Jewish experience as the
history and the culture on
which we depended for our
own freedom.
