France May Take a Tough Stand Against Israel

PARIS (JTA) — Suppor-
ters of Israel are seriously
concerned that a victory for
the Socialist-Communist
coalition in France's legis-
lative elections Sunday and
March 19 could mean a
tougher stand on Israel's
withdrawal from occupied
territory and the creation of
a Palestinian state.
Both parties in the left-
wing coalition recognize the
Palestine Liberation Or-
ganization as representa-
tive of the Palestinian
people. The Communist
line, however, is much
harsher on Israel than the
Socialists' which has mod-
erated recently.

Francois Mitterand,
Secretary General of Fr-

ance's Socialist Party, granted it. We believe, how-
said in an interview with ever, that the PLO will dep-
French-Jewish rive itself of its own means

HAIFA — A new method
to determine the state of
well-being of the human
fetus has been developed by
researchers in the depart-
ment of physics at the.
Technion-Israel Institute of
Technology, working in
cooperation with Haifa's
Rothschild Hospital.
The new clinical test
measures the rate of blood
flow in the maternal
placenta, says Prof. Baruch
Rosner, dean of the depart-
ment. Using radioactive
tracers-, the researchers
measured the blood flow in
100 pregnant women. With
the information gathered,
the team was able to de-
velop a blood flow test which
can distinguish signs of suf-
fering in the fetus.
The new system has an
advantage over earlier tests
in that it is indirect. Small
amounts of the tracers are
injected into the body's gen-
eral blood circulation rather
than directly intc the
placenta. This reduces the.
risk of damage to the organ.
The tracers are then moni-
tored by a new system of
radiation detecting equip-
ment placed near the abdo-
men. This enables the doc-
tors to determine if a heal-
thy blood flow is taking
place between mother and
fetus.

City Council Rescinds Vote
Supporting Alleged Terrorist

The Detroit City Council
on Wednesday rescinded by
a 5-4 vote its Feb. 22
unanimous resolution of
support for Michigan State
University student Sami
Esmail.
Esmail, a Palestinian-
American, was arrested by
Israeli authorities in De-
cember and charged with
being a member of the Popu-
lar Front for the Liberation
of Palestine terrorist group.
Councilman Clyde Cleve-
land, a sponsor of the origi-
nal resolution, said political
pressure was applied to re-
scind the resolution. Coun-
cilman Billy Rogell, who
along with David Eberhard,
proposed rescinding the re-
solution, said he had re-
ceived many telephone
calls, including some from
Jews, in opposition to the
original resolution.
