Lebanese `Sabras'
War Phenomenon
TEL AVIV (JTA) — Is-
rael's provision of medical
sanctuary for thousands of
Lebanese villagers
wounded or displaced in the
bitter civil war that raged in
the southern region of that
country has resulted in 751
Lebanese babies born on Is-
rael soil over the last two
years.
They are Lebanese "sab-
ras," according to Francis
Rezak, political adviser to
the south Lebanese army
commander, Maj. Saad
Haddad.
Rezak, who headed a de-
legation of south Lebanese
dignitaries during a visit to
Kibutz Shamir, said the in-
fants were -born in Israeli
hospitals where their
mothers found refuge be-
cause the fighting cut them
off from hospitals in their
own country.
In addition, more than
2,500 south Lebanese villa-
gers were treated in Israeli
hospitals for injuries sus-
tained in battles and there
are at least 500 Lebanese
"in whose bodies Israeli
blood runs," Rezak said.

That's our simple no-nonsense sales policy at Tamaroff
buick-Opel-Honda. And we mean to stick to it with each
and every customer. No song-and-dance. No double-talk.
No run-around. Just "straight-talk" and really "down-
to-earth" prices on Buicks, Opels and Hondas. You get
the car you want at the price we quoted. And, you know,
it must be working because we're the Buick
sales leader in this area.

Some 100 interested per-
sons attended a reception on
Saturday evening in honor
of Dr. and Mrs. Rafaeli at
Mrs. Brancheau's home
and others interested in the
Detroit Chapter can contact
her at work, 646-3212.
Mrs. Brancheau said,
"These people are in-
terested because they —
both Jews and non-Jews —
believe in what Haifa Uni-
versity is doing." She said
she hopes to set an example;
that Arabs and Jews can be
best of friends.
In that context, Dr.
Rafaeli said that funds
raised by the Friends of
Haifa University are impor-
tant to stave off cuts in fa-
culty, students and prog-
rams.
"But more important is
the sense of loneliness.
The knowledge that we
have friends who believe
in us, who take time out
from their day-to-day ac-
tivities to give us more
than their money . . .
their time. That is what is
important," he said.
"These people encourage
us psychologically, and the
more there are the better."
Dr. Rafaeli pointed out
that a number of students
from Mrs. Brancheau's vil-
lage in Southern Lebanon
are now attending Haifa U.
Her son is now planning
to attend the school in two
years.
"When Heidi's son
comes back to Detroit,"
Dr. Rafaeli said, "he will
be more of an Arab. He
will be part of a working
dialogue at Haifa Univer-
sity. For young Jewish
and young Arab students
there is no better way.
"We are not hiding our
different heritages, but
showing that we can coop-
erate," he said. "A peaceful
Middle East is a return to
our civilization's roots: the
Fertile Crescent.
"For 14 years Haifa Uni-
versity has proved that
thousands of young people,
Arabs and Jews, can coop-
erate."

Congress Blasts
Palestinian
Unit Open at UN
WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Both Houses of Congress
currently have legislative
proposals to stop U.S. par-
ticipation in the United Na-
tions General Assembly's
recent decision to establish
a special unit to spread in-
formation about "Palesti-
nian rights." The unit
began operating March 1.
Rep. Abner Mikva
introduced a companion bill
in the House to a previous
measure in the Senate
proposed-by Sen. J. Harri-
son Williams (D-N.D.
The alleged purpose of
the UN unit would be to
observe the international
day of solidarity with the
Palestinian people,"
Mikva said in the House.
"In reality, however, the
organization would dis-
seminate messages of
hatred against the state
of Israel and its inhabit-
ants. Such propaganda
can only complicate and
possibly jeopardize the
sensitive peace negotia-
tions now being con-
ducted in the Middle
East," he said.
According to Mikva, "the
newly formed group may be
viewed as an extension of
the UN Committee on the
Exercise of the inalienable
Rights of the Palestinian
People." This committee is
composed of 23 member
states, 19 of which have no
diplomatic relations with
Israel.
comprises a network of
about 200 elementary
schools and about 175 kin-
dergartens encompassing
about 40,000 children in
115 communities through-
out Israel.
Rabbi Eli Koslowitz, as-
sistant to the national pres-
ident Rabbi Moshe Feins-
tein, also will address the
gathering. Rabbi Leib
Bakst and Rabbi Leizer
Levin are honorary chair-
men. Max Carmen is the
chairman.
