Ideology and Politics at World Zionist Congress

How appropriate, there-
fore, that Begin should have
been a top spokesman to
welcome the Dulzin leader-
ship.
It was, indeed, as Dr.
Sternstein described it, an
historic session. Had Vla-
dimir Jabotinsky lived on to
witness the proceedings, he
would have experienced his
triumph over the opposition
to him, which at one time
included Chaim Weizmann,
an opposition that was espe-
cially dominant under
David Ben-Gurion.
This was one of the .re-
volutionary events of the
Revisionism in the saddle
after the many years of bit-
ter conflicts in Zionist
ranks.
Perhaps this is the new
era during which aliya will
be realized along with the
Ben-Gurion view, shared by
the new administration
with an echo of the past,
that to be a genuine Zionist
one must go to - Israel on
aliya.
All of the Begin-Dulzin
opponents were heard. All
sang the praises of the bril-
liant leader who struggled
for control and now has it.
The reasons for the many
praises for Dulzin are un-
derstandable. The Dulzin
election had to be made

reduction in stamina as-
cribable to a lessening in
educational programming.
There were many expres-
sing attitudes. Nahum
Goldmann may have sum-
marized them with an out-
cry of despair over indiffer-
ence.
So, a new administration

munities of Jews throtigh-

Goldmann threw in his
non-conformist view by de-
ploring the WZCongress as
no longer a forum. Truly,
there were more speeches
than discussion, yet there
were the dedicated pioneers
who did not permit chal-
lenges to go unanswered. In
some measuPe WZCongress
remains a forum. It would
have functioned better with
American efficiency. Often
a delegate was shoved to the
background by the en-
thusiasm of Israelis who
packed the hall during im-
portant sessions. It was

politics remains valid.
e deposed will soon be
seeking a way of getting
into power. Therefore, there
is a battle for positions on
the executive, for rulerships
in which opposition seeks
control of certain aspects of
Zionist power in the world
organization.

But the ideological tones
were not obliterated. They
are on the record. They are
agonizing. They are the voi-
ces of spokesmen who have
concerns lest there be an
overwhelming decline in
Jewish loyalties resulting
from intermarriage and a

PHILADELPHIA — An
annual lecture, to be deli-
vered by world-renowned
scholars, has been estab-
lished at Dropsie Univer-
sity. The lectureship was
endowed by Sol Feinstone.
Pennsylvania philan-
thropist.

The lectures, the first of
which will be delivered in
May, will be related to the
university's area of scho-
larly concerns: Hebrew, Bi-
blical and Middle Eastern
languages and cultures.

more education, with a bat-
tle against intermarriage.
There is the old battlecry,
spearheaded more than half
a century ago by Max Nor-
dau, that Zionists go forth to
"capture the communities."
There is a new call for aliya.
Will these outcries for a new
Zionist loyalty prove suc-
cessful? Both Begin and
Dulzin, and their followers,
are being put to the test. But
those now being truly tested

friends will help you.
