Ben-Elissar also ap-
peared at a press confer-
ence at which he outlined
Israel's needs and politi-
cal attitueds.
At the press confer-
ence, as he did in his ad-
dress last week at the na-
tional Israel Bonds con-
ference inaugurating the
nationwide Israel Bond
campaign, Ben-Elissar
clarified many issues in-
volved in the present Is-
raeli policies involving
peace efforts and the
quest for more defensive
arms. -
He expressed his belief
that an agreement would
be reached between the
two countries despite
present difficulties, but
emphasized that Israel
would never yield on
"things which affect our
future."
Speaking of the prop-
osed sale of jet fighters to
Egypt and Saudi Arabia
he declared, "If the Arabs
get advanced American
jets, it would have a nega-
tive effect on the peace-
making process."
Ben-Elissar pointed
out that the Arab coun-
tries now possess more
than 5,000 tanks com-
pared with the 2,700
tanks Hitler used to in-
vade the Soviet Union. He
said that Israel was pre-
pared to negotiate every-
thing "except the de-

Tourism

Record

NEW YORK — The flow
of American visitors to Is-
rael increased by 47 percent
in January, the biggest
January traffic inceease in
the history of American
tourism to Israel.
More than 14,000 Ameri-
cans came to Israel in
January (usually a low traf-
fic month),_ which followed
the record million visitors
from around the world who
vacationed in Israel in 1977.
Commenting on the fi-
gures, Israel Zuriel, Israel's
Commissioner for Tourism
in North America, pointed
out that January was the
first month of the year dur-
ing which the state of Israel
would be celebrating its
30th anniversary, and he
was confident that the
celebrations taking place in
the country during the year
would do much to continue
to encourage more Ameri-
cans to visit Israel in 1978.
