A 10-Speed View of Israel

By NURITH BARETSKY

year-old initiator and or-
ganizer of the tour, is the
owner of a bicycle store and
a bicycle in which he has in-
vested hours of modification
and invention. Two years
ago he visited Israel (he has
a daughter living in Haifa)
and toured the Negev on his
bicycle.
"I liked the idea and de-
cided it was a wonderful
way to see Israel.
The country has ideal
conditions for good riding —
sufficient distances, good
roads, light to moderate
traffic and beautiful sce-
nery.
By the time I met the
group, they had already
experienced the difficult
journey from Nahariya to
Safed, and the exciting
descent to Tiberias.
"The ride from Safed to
Tiberias was the most won-
derful of my entire life," one
rider said. "To see the Sea of
Galilee appearing at each
bend was just breathtaking.
I would also like to add that
the Israeli drivers have
treated us more politely
than their American coun-
terparts. They let us pass,
and sometimes they even
stopped and asked us about
our bicycles."

JERUSALEM — Six
Americans riding 10-speed
bicycles were seen together
recently in Western Galilee.
Later, they were spotted on
the winding road leading
down to Tiberias, and two
days more saw them speed-
ing through Tel Aviv. Soon
they were tasting the
monotony of the Arava Rd.,
and afterwards they sur-
prised the Bedouins in
Sinai.
"Why not tour Israel on
bicycles?" asks Roland Wil-
kins, advisor to a nylon
plant in Virginia. While
reading a magazine for
bicycle fans, Roland came
across a small notice adver-
tising a tour of Israel and
immediately took to the
idea.
"I am a Protestant who
has studied the Bible for
quite some time. I am very
interested in both the Bible
and hjstory. For years I
have 'thought of taking a
trip to Israel, and then sud-
denly, along came such an
opportunity — not only to
see Israel, but on bicycles
too."
I met the 'group at Mis-
hmar Ha'Emek five days
after their arrival at Lod
airport. They came pre-
pared with bicycles —

Tel Aviv Bomb
Kills 2, Injures 4

TEL AVIV (JTA) — A
man and woman in their 80s
were killed Wednesday
when an explosion wrecked
their house in the Hadar
Yossef section of Tel Aviv.
Two other elderly couples in
adjoining houses were in-
jured by splinters when
their homes were damaged.
The dead were identified
as Shmuel and Tova Alfi.
One of the injured couples
were identified as Alex and
Traria Lefkowitz. The third
couple were only slightly in-
jured.
Police said the explosion
was due to the detonation of
an explosive charge, but do
not yet know if it was a ter-
rorist act or the result of an
act of revenge by an indi-
vidual. Several Arabs wha
work in the area were de-
tained for questioning.
