THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS - Friday, February 24, 1918 43- 7 Israel's Tel Aviv University Sows Seeds (17z 3aT9 otl, Bala/ ( 17,td for Medicinal Plant Cultivation in the plant, the adaptability of the plant to Israel's climate, the most favorable condi- tions of cultivation, and the possibility of hybridi- zation of such plants for better results. The fact that plants may have medicinal properties should not be surprising. Plants, like man and ani- mals, have certain built-in mechanisms to ensure their survival against external dangers. As protection \ against insects and pred- ators, plants produce chem- icals or poisons of antibiotic activity, which can be therapeutically useful to man. The drug industry extra- cts beneficial chemicals from plants, based on their insect-repelling ability and on ethnobotanical informa- tion on medicinal plant use in tribes still living in na- ture. The reasons for trying to cultivate medicinal plants in Israel are manifold. As world medical care reaches new areas of the globe, and as life expectancy and world population increase, the market for medicinal plant ingredients is rising stead- ily. In the pharmaceutical world, a particular plant ingredient may occa- sionally be bought up on t'wr'491- a massive scale by the larger pharmaceutical companies, leaving the smaller ones unable to obtain the ingredient and paralyzing their produc- tion lines. The difficulty of Israeli pharmaceutical companies in obtaining medical ingre- dients is compounded by the political factors which can close markets in countries that refuse to trade with Is- rael.
