LISTENING
POST

TO APPRECIATE
WHAT the members of
Crescent Shrine who
worked at the Shrine Cir-
cus, did last week, was to be
in our shoes and actually
see.
Here were fellows from
all walks of life who gave up
a day of work or pleasure to
offer needed assistance .. .
seeing that their over 1,400
excited kiddies were well
taken care of . . . Leukemia
victims looking so healthy,
but you knew many would
never live to see another
circus . . . Retarded
youngsters who didn't know
how to cry . .. Kids with
multiple sclerosis, muscu-
lar dystrophy, cerebral
palsy and other handicaps
. . . All were gotten to their
seats and then came the hot
dogs, pop and popcorn, car-
ried and distributed by the
valiant men of Crescent.
What can a chairman like
ourselves say to these men
except thanks . . . There are
no proper words of accolade
which we could give . . .
Guys like our co-chairmen
Jack Shenkman and Sonny
Goldstein ... Crescent pres-
ident Sol Lakind and im-
mediate past president
Jimmy Laker . . . But to con-
tinue on with the names
would take an entire col-
umn . . . Not that they don't
deserve it . . . Heavens
above, these fellows merit
so very, very much more.
The true reward, how-
ever, lies in their hearts .. .
so truly magnificent this
day . . . They certainly de-
served to sleep good that
night . . . it was a day not to
be easily forgotten . . . Fel-
lows of Crescent, we're
mighty proud of you! '
MAIL DEPT . . . "Now
that we have some new
Southfield Council mem-
bers, maybe they can do
something about getting 12
Mile Rd. widened between
Telegraph and Northwest-
ern Highway."
. .. Joe Medwed
GET WELL WISHES ...
to Beatrice Levine . . . re-
cuperating at home from
Sinai Hospital.
MARC WOLIN, 15-
year-old son of Judy and
Chuck Wolin, had to do
something outstanding as
the main part toward earn-
ing his Eagle Scout rank .. .
and chose something mot
noteworthy ... Marc worked
as a bus boy at Katz' De-
licatessen in Oak Park .. .
saved his money to buy a
wheel chair . . . and pre-
sented it to the Children's
Leukemia Foundation.
ROSE AND SAM
KAPLAN, Desert Hot
Springs, Calif., correspon-
dents for the column, send a
list of hereabouts localites
who attended a recent
dinner-dance given by
Temple Nove Sholom in De-
sert Hot Springs .. ". Mira
and Nathan Berman, Edith
and Sol Levin, Rose and

Murray Masil, Pearl and
Abe Aslik, Carolyn and
Donna Lemberg, Ann
Reifler, Rose Miller
Winokur and Minnie Knop-
per.
STILL MEETING every
week is TOPS (Take Off
Pounds Sensibly) . . . every
Wednesday, 7 to 9 p.m., on
corner of Nine Mile and
Livernois . . . Call Sandy
Zack, 559-.5255 . . . Group
has been going since 1969,
taking off untold amount of
pounds from members .. .
and looking for more folks
who have too much -weight.

WONDERFUL THAT
the members of all the
synagogue and temple
men's clubs come together
to break bread . . . as they
did at the recent 45th an-
nual Inter-Congregational
Dinner-Dance . . . But why
not a program of some sort
where the fellows can get to
know each other? . . . Why
can't each synagogue or
temple in attendance be
mentioned? . . . The printed
program didn't even have
them all.
It's great that some of the
men get to see each other .. .
some after many years .. .
But what of those who don't
know anybody?
DETROIT LODGE 55,
Knights of Pythias
Dinner-Dance, March 11, at
Michigan Inn, will have the
rhythms of Shel Rott's
chestra with songstress-
wife Vicki Carroll . . . For
tickets, call co-chairmen,
Frank Selman, 543-7387, or
Chuck Fields, 967-3714.
OAK PARK HIGH
SCHOOL alumni are being
invited with their sons and
daughters to return to Oak
Park High School for a 24th
Anniversary Party of the
school district, May 21 . In
preparation, memorabilia
in the form of pictures,
school newspapers, year-
books, etc. will be accepted
either for loan or donation
by Evelyn Rosen, Oak Park
High School Media Center.
WALTER KLEIN,
former executive director of
the Jewish Community
Council, tells the true yarn
about a Chinese in Atlanta
opening a laundry and in
front hanging a sign, "Jew
Laundry. Drink Coca Cola"
. . . Instantly the wheels of
the community whirred into
action and the gentleman
was asked the whys and
wherefores . . . He at first
insisted that that was his
name ... Some further prob-
ing developed that his name
was Chou . . . that he had
surmised the English trans-
lation to be "Jew" . . . and of
course that the Coca Cola
people had painted the sign
for him.
