THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Yankee Who Boosted Israel Basketball Retires Sneakers By HASKELL COHEN (Copyright 1978, JTA, Irte.) The man who "put bas- ketball on the map" for Is- rael is finally doffing his sneakers and calling it a day. I am referring to Tal Brody, the American boy who first visited Israel in 1965 with the United States Maccabia team, fell in love with the country, came back to serve his army tenure in the United States Army, and then made what defi- i- —Iitely appears to be perma- aliya. Somehow, Brody caught the fancy of the sparse crowds With his sparkling play. In addition, of course, he picked up the language rapidly and be- came, to all intents and purposes, 100 percent Is- raeli. He comes from a Zionist background. His father, many years ago in his youth, had migrated to Palestine and worked as a pioneer there before migrat- ing to the United States. As a. matter of fact, Brody's father is going back to Israel to join his son as a new im- migrant. Once the younger Brody mastered the lan- guage he joined the teaching staff of the Win- gate School of Physical Education where he gave courses on basketball to budding coaches. The crowning point in his long career with the Mac- cabi five came about last year when he led that quin- tet to the European Cup In- ternational championship in Belgrade where the Mac- cabi five downed the Italian representative in the game. Israel will miss Brody's playing. To his credit it has to be remembered that he "made" Israeli basketball go. He will never be forgot- ten for this. , The store that puts it all together. • WALLCOVERING • LEVOLOR BLINDS • VERTICAL BLINDS • WOVEN WOODS • WINDOW SHADES • CUSTOM SHUTTERS gnomic PAINT - & WALLPAPER 542-3315 23061 COOLIDGE HWY., OAK PARK, AT 9 MI. Friday, February 24, 1978 11 ck. Fest's `Face of the Third Reich' By ALLEN A. WARSEN Joachim C. Fest in "The Face of the. Third Reich," subtitled "Portraits of the Nazi Leadership" (Panth- eon Books), presents inci- sive character sketches of Hitler and his associates. • Fest asserts that "Mein Kampf" comprises "an exact portrait of its author: the high-falutin disorder of its ideas; the random know- ledge posing as scientific ob- . jectivity; the lack of self- control and the constant lapsing into the extreme opposite; the cramped rigid- ity of dammed-up energy; the maniac egocentri- city and utter lack of hu- manity throughout the whole of its great length; the monotony of its obses- - sions." Fest adds: ". . . in his description of the 'anti-man' we come again and again upon unmistakable projections of Hitler's own character: the Jews' alleged obsession with revenge, their feelings of inferiority, *their Just to subjugate and destroy, represent the transference onto his enemy of compulsive character traits which Hitler sensed within himself." Next to Hitler, the most repugnant Nazi was Hermann Goering who fancied himself as "The Number Two," though "The Number One" re- garded him as the "greatest failure," and for good reason: he was vain, lived luxuriously, was self-indulgent, pompous, and reluctant to face reality even in times of great peril and military disasters. He was depicted as a "per- fumed Nero playing the lyre . . . while Rome was in `flames." For his crimes, the International Court of Jus- tice sentenced him to die, but he committed' suicide the night he was to be hanged. Goering's rival, Joseph Goebbels, once said, "We shall go down in history as the-greatest statesmen of all time, or as the greatest criminals." Goebbels, the Nazi mas- ter propagandist, called the Reichstag "a stinking dun- gheap." He was the creator of the cult of the "Fuhrer" and invented slogans, myths and images. His Jew-hatred was the externalized expression of self-hatred. Curiously, Goebbels was often called "the ,Rabbi." On May 1, 1945, he murdered his chil- dren, and a few hours later his wife and he committed suicide. Reinhard Heydrich, whom Goebbels and others regarded beneath their status, was tall, blond, graceful, athletic, devoid of emotions, and contemptuous of ideologies. Hitler called him "the Man with the Iron Heart." He looked the ideal "Aryan type." Yet, he was tormented by feelings of guilt: he had Jewish ancestors. He also said, "I know that there are many people in Germany who feel sick when they see this tunic." Martin Bormann was called "Hitler's evil spirit." However, "this WHEN YOU SEE phrase," according to the author, "does not by any means permit us to con- clude that he forced a be- nevolent Hitler unto the path of evil, he was rather the Devil's Beelzebub."
