Ex-Detroiter Analyzes U.S. Jews
by Link to Faith, Participation
By BEN GALLOB
(Copyright 1978, JTA, Inc.)
A Jewish sociologist has
proposed a set of seven
categories to characterize
the Jewish behavior of
American Jews, with the
smallest number — some
20,000 — in the category of
Repudiators, those who
deny their Jewishness.
The categories were de-
veloped by former Detroiter
Daniel J. Elazar, in his
study "Community and Pol-
ity: The Organization
Dynamics of American
Jewry," published in 1976.
The categories were listed
in a report in the current
issue of the "Forum," in an
analysis by Prof. Charles
Liebman. The quarterly
Forum is published by the
World Zionist Organiza-
tion.
Liebman is a visiting pro-
fessor at the Jewish
Theological Seminary, on
leave from Bar-Ilan Uni-
versity. Prof. Elazar is
chairman of the political
studies department at Bar-
Ilan University and director
of the center for study of
federalism at Temple Uni-
versity.
At the other end of the
Elazar spectrum is the
category of Integral
Jews, those for whom
Jewishness is a central
concern of their lives,
whether it is de-
monstrated in traditional
religious terms or by in-
tensive involvement in
Jewish activities.
For those Jews, esti-
mated by Elazar to number
between 300,000 and
500,000, from five to eight
percent of all American
Jews, "every day is lived by
a substantial Jewish
rhythm."
Elazar asserted that the
Repudiators, estimated by
him to be less than five per-
cent of American Jews,
have declined in numbers
and are not as hostile as
they °met§ were about
Jewish matters.
Another Elazar category
is made up of Participants.
He estimated the number of
Participant Jews as bet-
ween 600,000 and 700,000,
from 10 to 12 percent of
American Jews.
Elazar described Par-
ticipant Jews as those
who take part in Jewish
life in a regular way and
who are more than casu-
ally active in Jewish life
but "their rhythm of life
is essentially that of the
larger society" in which
they live.
A much larger number of
American Jews are clas-
sified by Elazar as As-
sociated Jews. He estimated
their number at around two
million, or between 30 and
35 percent of all American
Jews. He described them as
Jews who are affiliated with
but not active in
synagogues or mass mem-
bership organizations such
as Hadassah and Bnai
Brith.
Such Jews, he contended,
use the synagogue for
Jewish rites of passage or
High Holy Day services, but
they have no sustained in-
terest in synagogue life.
Their membership reflects
mainly social interests
rather than "a concern for
the public purpose of Jewish
life."
Another Elazar category
with a large number of Jews
are Contributors and Con-
sumers, numbering bet-
ween 1.5 and 1.8 million
Jews, or about 20 to 25 per-
cent of all Jews.
He said Jews give
money to Jewish causes
from time to time and
may use the service of a
synagogue periodically
for a marriage or a Bar
Mitzva or for a burial.
While they identify them-
selves as Jews, according
to Elazar, their loom-
munal association is min-
imal.
Some 15 percent of
American Jews, roughly
900,000, he classified as
Peripherals. They identify
themselves as Jews, but are
totally uninvolved in
Jewish life.
The seventh category
make up the Quasi Jews, es-
timated by Elazar as mak-
ing up five to 10 percent of
American Jews. He de-
clared that most of them
have married non-Jews and
that they have assimilated
to a point at which the fact
of their Jewish birth is inci-
dental "in every respect."
