ADL Asks Probe
of SUNY Ethnic
Studies Units

NEW YORK—The case of
a State University of New
York history , and African
studies professor, who
claims he was fired- because
he is white, has prompted
the Anti-Defamation
League of Bnai Brith to call
for a probe of all SUNY
ethnic studies departments.
In a letter to Dr. Theodore
M. Black, chancellor of the
university, the ADL stated
that the case raised by
Lawrence Salomon, who
once worked at the SUNY
campus at New Paltz,
should lead to an overall re-
view of- the "problem of
ghettoization" of such de-
partments at other cam-
puses. 'Salomon claimed
that when African studies
were phased out he could
not get a job in tie black
studies department, which
to .date is staffed only - by
blacks. • -
The letter saidthe ADL
"continues to strongly sup-
port a merit system," and
that "we insist that the
selection of candidates be
based on qualifications
without regard to race, sex,
creed or national origin."
Since Prof. Salomon is ex-
perienced and qualified to
teach many of the black his-
tory courses, the letter
sought "his immediate
reassignment to the black
studies department."

Tel Aviv, Rio
Twin City Pact
Signing Canceled

TEL AVIV (JT.A)—
Intervention by the Brazi-
lian Foreign Office forced
the municipal authorities of
Rio de Janeiro to cancel the
signing of a twin city pact
with Tel Aviv, only hours
before the ceremonies were
to be held with Tel Aviv
Mayor Shlomo Lehat and
his wife attending.
The action was attributed
in Tel Aviv to pressure by
the oil-producing Arab
states on the Brazilian gov-
ernment.
Twin city pacts are
mutual gestures of friend-
ship that have symbolic
significance but nothing to
do with politics.
