Schubert's Jewish Works

Jewish community in 1617.
In 1804, Solomon Sulzer.
was born there. At the age of
16 he became cantor of his
native town and left six
years later to accept the
prestigious position as lead-
ing cantor of Vienna's new,
main synagogue, "The
Seitenstaetten-Temple".
Sulzer's baritone voice
and musicianship won the
admiration of Schubert and
Liszt.
In 1828, Schubert wrote
for Sulzer the 92nd Psalm
with the sub-title "Song
for the Sabbath" to the
original Hebrew text. Its
first presentation took
place at the Vienna Tem-
ple in July, 1828 with
Sulzer as soloist.
This composition became
part of the "Solomon Sulzer
collection offlebrew Religi-
ous songs Shir Zion" and
was published in 1870 with
the German text by Moses
Mendelssohn. .-
