UJA Leader Defends Fein's Analysis of Israel Situation

Editor, The Jewish News:
I must take issue with the
interpretaion of Leonard
Fein's speech by Mrs.
Dorothy Medalie in your
issue of Jan. 27. Mrs.
Medalie is being very naive
if she does not believe that
there could be a split in the
American Jewish commun-

ity if the peace talks break
down.
All she has to do is to re-
view the history of last May,
when Mr. Begin was
elected, to understand that
many Jews in America do
not agree with Mr. Begin's
views. However, the point
. Prof. Fein was making was
that it is now more imporz
tant than ever for the
Jewish community to stand
behind Israel, despite some
individual, personal 'view-
points.
Prof. Fein was in no way
suggesting that we should
or could threaten or
blackmail Israel by suggest-
ing the possibility of a split
in the American Jewish
community. He was merely
warning us of what might
happen and telling us
that we must be prepared to
counteract it, thereby
guaranteeing increased fi-
nancial suppoit.

Medalie suggested. He was but that we must de-
very pro-Israel in his re- monstrate to the people of
marks, but also very realis- Israel our complete moral
tic. Prof. Fein's speech was support as well as our in-

Sadat's Soliloquy

Editor, The Jewish News:
If there is one redeeming
factor to be attributed to
Sadat's efforts it must be the
fact that he initiated the
first direct contact between
-Arabs and Israelis in a move
toward settling their dis-
pute of decades.
Otherwise the only thing
of note is his persistence as
demonstrated by his re-
peated parrot-like squawk-
ing, "We will not give up one
inch of land."
It prompts one to wonder
if positions were reversed
and the Arabs held land
taken from Israel as a result
of military action if he
would continue to squawk,
"We will not give up one
inch of land."
In your anguish, crocodile
tears. become you, Mr.
Sadat.

Only when he was
questioned about his

viewpoint, ' did Fein's
opinion come out. He
was, in no way, imposing
it upon the audience — or
on Israel.

Prof. Fein is a staunch
supporter of Israel and the
United Jewish Appeal. He
has given his time, eff
and money to see that m
money is raised for Israe
humanitarian needs. Prof.
Fein deserves our sincere
thanks for a most enlighten-
ing, honest and moving
speech.
