(ONE BLOCK EAST OF SOUTHFIELD RD.)

the chief supervisor, Rabbi
Shulem Rubin.
Rabbi Rubin told the
Jewish Telegraphic Agency
that 69 cases of _violation of
the kosher labeling law
were reported to the de-
partment during the last
four months of 1977. He
said this compared to a total
of 92 reported violations for
all of 1976.
The vic'ations were found
throughout the state in the
regular inspection Visits to
supermarkets, kosher re-
staurants, kosher resort
hotels, kosher caterers,
kosher butchers, a
wholesale provisions fac-
tory and kosher camps,
Types of violations co-

vered such cases as non- -
kosher sweetbreads sold as
kosher, tongues made non-
kosher by being found soak-
ing in barrels of brine salt
water, non-soaked and
non-salted meat sold as
soaked and salted, and
non-kosher ingredients or
additives used in food' prep-
aration in kosher restaur-
ants and hotels.

Rabbi Rubin said that-
during Thanksgiving
week more than 100 tur-
keys had been offered by
retailers as kosher which
were found to be not
kosher.

He said on each inspec-
tion, inspectors are required

AAJE Studies Self, Fellows
to Attract Jewish Teachers

NEW YORK (JTA) —
The American Association
for Jewish Education
(AAJE-) has undertaken a
comprehensive study of its
program, structure- and
manner of operation as the
nation-al service agency for
coordination, research and
promotion of Jewish educ,a-
tion in the United States. •

Arthur Brody, newly
elected president of the
AAJE, reported to the an-
nual midwinter meeting of
the agency's National Gov-
erning Council that the
study has been commis-
sioned "to determine how
leaders of Jewish comm.un-
ity federations and local
central agencies of Jewish
education perceive the
AAJE's role in advancing
Jewish education in their
areas."

In another major policy
move, the National Govern-
ing Council enacted a series
of proposals affecting the
AAJE's Fellowships in
Jewish Educational Lead-
ership (FIJEL) program
which are designed to
guarantee participants ac-
cepting career assignments
in Jewish education upon _
completion of their train-
ing.

The AAJE found that a
number of Fellows did
not take teaching posi-
tions after graduating the
programs largely be-
cause of low starting
salaries in the field.

Dr. Harry Passow,
chairman of the agency's
FIJEL Advisory Commit-
tee, said that -initial annual
salaries of $9,000 in day
schools and $6,000 in
supplementary schools "are
neither adequate for modest
living purposes. nor com-
parable with the- average
starting salary of $13,000 in
such areas as Jewish com-
munity relations, social
service and group work.

The proposals regarding
financial arrangements
with initial placement —
capable of providing for 14
fellowships annually —
would include placement in
a teaching or related posi-
tion in a Jewish school, pay-
ing a salary of approxi-

mately $6,000 a year; joint
part-time ,placement in a
local central agency of
Jewish education, paying
approximately $3,000 a
year; and subsidization by
the AAJE of up to $4,000 a
year.

to get a signature from the
owner or a subordinate,
thus assuring that the in-
spections have been
documented and providing
for accountability in the in-
spection process. The law
was created to protect ob-
servant consumers from-
misrepresentation, mis-
leading and other forms of
deCeption, he said.
